INTERMEDIATE GIRLS TABLE TENNIS SMR RUNNER-UP
On Thursday 26 October, the McKinnon Intermediate Girls Table Tennis team consisting of Jordi Yahalom 9F, Angelina Kaminsky 9H, Subira Seymour 9N, and Angelica Kutiepova 9H travelled to the Greater Dandenong Table Tennis Association to compete in the School Sport Victoria Table Tennis Southern Metro Regional final.
The McKinnon team performed very well throughout the day, winning all their pool matches in a convincing fashion: 6-0, 4-2 and 4-2 respectively. They then had the opportunity to play against the traditional table tennis heavyweight of MacRobertson Girl HS in the SMR finals.
Unfortunately, the girls could not overcome their more experienced opponent losing 0-4 and had to settle for 2nd place. But becoming SMR runner-up was a tremendous achievement by the McKinnon team. Well done.
INTERMEDIATE BOYS TABLE TENNIS SMR RUNNER-UP
On the same day the Girls team competed in the SMR final, the McKinnon Intermediate Boys Table Tennis team (Jasper Wong 10P, Vibhan Jivanjee 9E, Peter Kats 10H, Nathan Yahalom 10Q and Nathan Pong 10M) also travelled to Dandenong to play in the boys/mixed section of the final.
The boys team started very strongly with a 6-0 win against Kambrya. Then, they had two close encounters with Hampton Park and Frankston High but still managed to beat their opponents 4-2 and 5-1 respectively. By winning all three matches, they progressed to the final to face the former champion of Melbourne High.
Despite some exciting games (and powerful shots played by Jasper Wong), the team could not overcome their opponent, losing 0-4 in the final. But the team should be proud of their achievement in winning the Runner-up pennant. Well done.
YEAR 8 BOYS TABLE TENNIS SMR FINALS
On Thursday 2 November, Arvin Yeung 8S, Angad Saini 8B, Gabriel Kouprine 8S, and Xavier Grigo 8G participated in the School Sport Victoria Year 8 Boys/Mixed Table Tennis Southern Metro Regional final at Dandenong.
The day started well with Arvin and Xavier winning their singles against Minaret College. Then, the four boys combined to take out the two doubles as well, winning the round 4 rubbers to 2.
Next, they were up against Cranbourne West Secondary College. After big wins in the singles from Arvin and Angad, the team wrapped up the round 5 rubbers to 1.
Finally, in the last pool match, the McKinnon team was up against Frankston High School. Despite a superb performance from Arvin Yeung who beat his opponent convincingly 3-0, the Frankston team struck back with three close wins in the remaining singles. In the deciding doubles, both schools won 1 rubber each, leading to the final match score of 2-4 in favor of Frankston.
Despite being eliminated at the pool stage of the SMR finals, the Year 8 team has shown a lot of potential, and we look forward to their participation in the intermediate team next year.
