Year 7 Humanities

Know Your Roots Inc. Program

Our Year 7 Humanities students were given a taste of Pasifika culture last semester as they took part in the Know Your Roots Inc. (KYR) program, run through their Humanities studies.

The group have spent time in class learning about the various aspects of Pasifika culture, including the customs, values and traditions home to the Samoan, Tongan and Maori peoples.

The students have been led by KYR program mentor, Ofeira Satele and spent time learning about the culture through storytelling, dance and music, which even incorporated some language lessons!

Humanities Domain Leader Cathy Falk said the students feedback around the classes has been positive all round, with program participants getting excited for the next session of KYR.

The KYR program has been embedded in GSSC curriculum since 2021 thanks to the Point of Difference Studio. It provides a means for local community leaders and mentors to provide students an opportunity to reconnect with their culture and share it with their peers.

The KYR program is delivered at GSSC through our Year 7 Humanities studies and is offered in Year 9 as an elective subject.

For Semester 2, students will spend time learning about Middle Eastern culture as part of the program.
