Merimbula Jazz Festival

The swing band travelled to Merimbula on the long weekend to attend the 41st Jazz Festival. The slightly smaller size of the band this year didn’t stop them from giving fantastic performances. The band received many complements including "absolutely fabulous to watch BSC's students perform" and “they are definitely setting the bar high for other secondary schools in the area”.

A huge thank you to James Newman for his direction of the band and to the volunteers Chelsea, Paige, John and Lynette for playing with us. It is fantastic to see ex-students and staff continuing to be involved with the BSC music program. We also had Nora from Orbost SC join in with our performances since Orbost couldn’t attend the festival this year.

New Bass Clarinet

The music department has recently purchased a new bass clarinet for the use of students in the band program. This purchase was only made possible due to a very generous donation by an anonymous donor. The bass clarinet is currently played in the senior band by Maddy and is providing a new, exciting depth of colour to the ensemble. This instrument will provide clarinet students the opportunity to play a high-quality instrument in the program for decades and will give students who are serious with continuing onto tertiary music an instrument to learn on.

It was interesting that there was a bass clarinet being played in the Navy Big Band at Merimbula so there may be other opportunities for this instrument in other school ensembles.

We are most grateful to our donor and thank them for the opportunity they have provided current and future students.

East Gippsland Music Festival

Not long to go now! All band and string students are in full preparation for the festival next week. The ensembles will be rehearsing in Boucher Hall on the following days:

The Gala Concert starts at 7.00 pm with a $5 per adult entry at the door. Details are on Compass for participants to see and attend to.
