Health News
This term in health, the Reception to year 4’s have been developing their understanding of safety and awareness. Recognising ways to keep safe in different situations and understanding warning signs is very important for all of us.
The Receptions have worked very well to recognise trusted adults they can talk to if they are unsafe, uncomfortable or unsure. We have discussed safer strangers we can go to in the community, who will help us if ever we are lost or if there is an emergency (police, fire, ambulance).
The year 1 and 2’s especially have been looking at sun safety coming into summer, road safety and reminding ourselves and others in the school about the playground rules and why it is important to follow them.
We have had some great discussions with the year 3’s and 4’s about different scenarios that might be safe or unsafe and had role play sessions to demonstrate their understanding. We have some budding actors in the making!
The year 5, 6 and 7’s are developing their understanding of ways to keep healthy through choices of diet and the positive impact of exercise. We have reflected on the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and looked at daily recommended serving sizes for each food group. We are developing knowledge of the importance of preventative health.
Wishing everyone a safe and healthy end to the year!

Room 22
Strike a Pose!
This week in Maths we have been naming, comparing and creating angles. After brainstorming different places where we have seen angles, we decided to strike a pose and find all the angles in our photos! We found acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles. We even found full rotations!
Room 5A
This term, Room 5A has been looking at weather in Science. We have observed daily weather changes and the symbols associated with these. In Maths, we have been focusing on odd and even numbers. Students have been involved in games such as Even Steven and Odd Todd. In HASS, we have explored how different countries around the world celebrate Christmas. We have been on virtual tours using Google Maps.
Room 30
Room 30 students got a taste of University Life in Week 1, with a visit to Flinders University. Year 6/7 students were enlightened about life on-campus, what courses are available, what facilities students can access and the many opportunities that come with pursuing a University degree.
Back in the classroom, Room 30 students are learning about poetry, Ancient China, our connection to Asia and Earth and Space.
We are also taking a look at both traditional and contemporary Aboriginal Art, with the support of Aboriginal Community Education Officer Karen Ahang. Over the course of the term, students will be producing a painting that represents their life journey so far.
Finally, Room 30 has embarked on Genius Hour! Students spend an hour each week exploring their own passions by investigating new ideas or skills. This gives them a chance to study and learn about things that interest them.
Room 4
In Maths we have been investigating Chance and Data.
We have looked at the language of Chance to describe everyday situations. We recorded things that we do every day, sometimes and never.
As a class, we collected data about the different pets we had at home. We then organised the data into groups so we could see which pet people had the most of. It was dogs! We then came up with some of our own questions that we could collect data on.
Some of the questions were –
What is your favourite ice cream?
What is your favourite food?
What is your favourite animal?
What is your favourite colour?
We also worked in groups to record how many of each colour pencil was in a pencil pot. Once we recorded our data we could tell which colour had the most and which colour had the least.
When we shared our learning, we discovered different ways of recording our data. Some people drew pictures, others did tallies and some used numbers.
Room 19
For Term 4, Room 19 has a focus on media. We have used iPads to take photos, take videos, make iMovies and create digital images to tell a story. We created our own success criteria for ‘what makes a good one’.
The students have explained what we have done so far.
Taking photos
- When we were taking photos we learnt that we had to have the perfect angle
- We learnt to go close and far away.
- We made sure our fingers were out of the way
- When we made a mistake we learnt how to delete the photo
- We took a photo and then we checked it to see if we liked it
Creating a story with a digital image
- We have been looking at Mitchel Wu photography that he takes using toys.
- You can use figurines and a green screen to create your background.
- The digital image tells a story.
- We are planning to make our own digital images soon!
Taking videos
- Speak loud and clear
- The sun goes behind you so the photo isn’t too bright
- Get a good angle
- Close up video
- Make it clear
- Ask permission before you take somebody's image
- No interruptions in the video
iMovie
- We took photos of nature and people.
- We took photos and videos of plasticine characters we made.
- We took the photos and video and put them together to make an iMovie.
