Indonesia Trip

For just over a week during the school holidays, Scott Black, Allen Dickson and Leah Nicholls took off to the North of Sumatra to work with the staff at Hope Village.

Hope Village was started as an orphanage in 2006 and is now home to approximately 60 children. The orphanage has grown into a Primary School with over 300 students servicing not only the orphanage but also the local villages and it was with great excitement that their Junior High School, with 60 students and 4 staff, launched just last week.

Working alongside staff from Bethany Christian School in South Australia, they ran personal development sessions with the teachers at Hope School.

Allen demonstrated his robot enthusiasm while introducing the staff to BeeBots and Dash - it was a delight to see the staff faces as they were told they could keep the robots to use in their classes.

Leah shared with the staff about curriculum design and Scott followed this up with differentiation and tailoring our classes to suit the needs of our students.

They also had the pleasure of taking part in the first day of the Junior High School - spending time juggling and playing kickball as well as witnessing their opening assembly and seeing the joy and delight on not only the students faces but those of the parents too.  Even though the building is yet to be completed, there is an air of expectation around what is to come in the future.

We at BHCS are starting a partnership with Hope Village, which was initially made through various staff connections, their vision being to help those in need and to break the poverty cycle through education.

While they went there to help train the Indonesian teachers, they all came back feeling that they had also been enriched by the experience.  We look forward to returning and continuing the partnership with not only Hope School staff but those from Bethany and beyond too.
