Alumni Spotlight

You may have noticed we have added a new section to the newsletter! Every fortnight we will be sharing with you a different past JMSS student. We will see what they have been doing since leaving school, what paths they have taken and their favourite memories of school. Enjoy!

Phoebe Yeung - 2015

Phoebe Yeung graduated from JMSS in 2015.

What have you been doing since you left JMSS?

I am currently in my final year of studying a Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging (Hons), working for an aged care provider part time and working in clerical roles at Dandenong Hospital.

I also manage the Monash University Cheerleading and Dance Club, as President, which is 113 athletes strong and encourages everybody to be the best they can be and learn new skills.

During your time as a student at JMSS, what did you like most?

I loved the attitude of teachers who would assist us in guiding us to the answers to questions that we may have had that they may not have been able to answer.

Was there anyone who inspired you?

Thomo - he's such a kind teacher who went above and beyond to make sure that I would have guidance and assistance at all times. I didn't understand chemistry in year 10 and held a little classroom tutorial session with us year 10's in DY5 to help us when we felt lost.

What's your favourite memory of JMSS?

Going to the Singapore International Science Challenge in 2015 with my friend Beth, Maxine and Mr McTier. We got to meet people from all over the world and learn about other cultures, new and unique scientific ideas and gaining an insight into research conferences.

What advice would you give to a current JMSS student?

Get involved everywhere you can at school because it may spark something in you that you never even thought of.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am on the advanced cheerleading team at Monash Cheer and Dance as well as two dance teams. I love managing the club and seeing how our athletes develop their skills and finding a home at uni. We're a high achieving club that caters to all age groups and being able to manage a 10 person committee as well as all my athletes is such a great opportunity to developing leadership skills. Overall, it's been a home to me.

What's next for you?

I'll be graduating end of this year and will be off into the real world taking x-rays and CT scans soon. I'm also hoping to go to the world championships for university cheerleading next year.

My time at JMSS really helped me explore different facets of education that interested me and all the teachers encouraged active learning, teaching me how to be proactive which has translated well into adult life. I am really thankful for the teachers at JMSS for this!
