Dear Parents and Students,

To our students, welcome back from your Semester 1 holidays.  I hope you have had a restful and reinvigorating holiday.

Term 3 has commenced with a number of events such as Course Information Nights about subject selection for Year 10 and Year 11 students, and later there will be VTAC University Application Information Night for the Year 12 students.  Now is the time for students to have deep reflection of their learning journey. I would encourage students to examine their progress thus far and to seek the advice for further improvements from their teachers.

In Stephen Covey’s 1988 bestseller ‘The 7 habits of Highly Effective People’, he discussed a habit summarized as ‘Begin with the End in Mind’.  It means to know where you are going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction.

For some students, the pursuit of success means working harder and harder, ‘climbing the ladder of  success’. However, it is very important for students to be able to pause and reflect. As Stephen Covey puts it:  “if the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster”. Covey’s metaphor is a strong reminder for us to constantly check through reflection of ‘where we are going’ and ‘what we are doing to get there’.  Therefore, I encourage our students to develop their goals for their learning journey (finding the ‘right wall’) and ‘climb the ladder on this wall’ with a purposeful pace with time for reflection.
