Elevate Educate - Study Skills

Early in term 2,  junior school students were provided with an educational seminar from the organisation Elevate Education. This organisation works with high school students in providing them with the skills to maximise their learning. Each year level focused on a specific study skill which will be built upon throughout the years.

In order to ensure each session is meaningful, the Junior School team has decided to select one specific skill from each session for each year level to focus on.

Over the coming weeks we will share these skills with parents and provide insight into what they mean and how they work. This will enable parents and carers to support the learning of their child ensuring it is consistent to what is being done in the classroom.

Students in Year 7, focused on the skill of Dynamic Reading. This skills involves the process of identifying the key points of a text and how these points are relevant to its purpose.

Year 8 students learnt the skill of formatting their notes based on their reading. This involves taking the important information from the reading and placing it in such a way that the student is able to understand and access the information effectively and efficiently.

Finally, Year 9 were introduced to the process of using mnemonic techniques. Mnemonic techniques aid the memory of content and assist the students to understand it rather than rote learn the content. As students in this year are moving closer to the senior years, it is important for students to develop higher order thinking skills such as the ability to formulate a well-balanced discussion. One such method of a mnemonic technique is the Method of Loci. This method will be explained further in upcoming newsletters.

The next newsletter will have a detailed outline of the Dynamic Reading technique which is the focus in Year 7.

Careers Days at KIOSC

On Thursday 10 May our Year 9 and 10 students headed to KIOSC to develop their understanding of possible career pathways.

Below is a snap shot of the highlights of the day from our year 9 students.

“In KIOSC, my highlight was health and science. Health and science was really fun because we got to learn and use the things that doctors and nurses use. I chose health science because in the future I will be taking paramedics or nursing, so it has given me a head start.”

Kelly De Vera 9A

“The KIOSC careers excursion on Thursday was a great and insightful experience as it gave me a taste of what’s to come later in life.”

Tatira Tatira

“In KIOSC I really enjoyed the animation unit. I enjoyed figuring out how many stop and start photos we had to take.”

Holly Crennan

“I learnt that time lapse is to make the film go very quick and how to do it, and how to use photoshop.”

Chloe Zou

“My highlight was doing animation because we did photography and I enjoyed doing it because it’s something I want to grow up and become. I’d like to say a big thank you to KIOSC for having us.”

Brooke Heinley

“I really enjoyed KIOSC, I got to experience graphic design and animation. They were both things I enjoyed and am good at but I’m not sure it’s something I’d take on in the future.”

Year 7 - Anti Bullying Song

Here is a song written by two of our Year 7 students on the subject of cyber bullying.

[Chorus]

You say I’m too fat

You say I’m too skinny

You say I’m not cool

You say I’m not pretty

Then you spread it all around and post it online for the whole world to see

But little do they know that’s not me

(Oh yeah, don’t be mean behind the screen).

[Verse 1]

Messing things up all the time for ya

Let me think who causes that, ah

It is really all these people who get in your face

Making themselves look just like a disgrace

Acting all tough and powerful

All they really are is sourful

Of the fact you are so up high

They have to knock your pedestal to just get by

Why do they waste time?

Just trying to make themselves look prime

(Yeah better watch your mouth)

[Chorus]

You say I’m too fat

You say I’m too skinny

You say I’m not cool

You say I’m not pretty

Then you spread it all around for the whole world to see

But little do they know that’s not me

[Verse 2]

(Listen up you victims this part is sang to you)

Throughout life people will make you mad (2x)

Disrespect you and treat you bad

Let God deal with the things they do

Cause hate in your heart will consume you

[Chorus]

You say I’m too fat

You say I’m too skinny

You say I’m not cool

You say I’m not pretty

Then you spread it all around for the whole world to see

But little do they know that’s not me

Today I do what’s right

And put a stop to this bullying
