Anzac Commemoration 2017

By Joy McGrath (Teacher)

This past Wednesday, our school community gathered together once again to honour the Spirit of the Anzacs. Student leaders representing all three school levels actively contributed to the service, from the traditional ‘Setting of the Table’ through to the laying of beautiful wreaths created by Leanne Webster.

It was wonderful to hear Jonah O read his original poem entitled ‘Gallipoli’. Senior students sang an arrangement of ‘In Flander’s Fields’ under the direction of Darryl Thompson on the keyboard and a flute descant by Joy McGrath. Benjamin S (Year 10) researched and wrote an overview of Australia’s military involvements from World War 1 through to Afghanistan. He also crafted PowerPoint slides to complement this script, in which the names and photos of our own BHCS veterans were incorporated. As the history was read, the Preps placed poppies in honour of these servicemen and women. Another highlight was a video reflection by our Chaplain, Nick Crawley, of his grandfather’s military service, assisted by the editing skills of Jono Callow. As always, it was a privilege to be involved in the Anzac ceremony.

Thank you again to every family who sent in information and photos of their loved ones who have worn the Australian military uniform with pride. In the current international climate, the words ‘Lest We Forget’ are both a timely reminder and a very real warning.
