Term 3 Week 1

Home Learning

English

Reading

This week in Reading we will be working with the picture story book "Just a Dream" by Chris Van Allsburg. Students will be completing a 'Literacy Menu' throughout the week with different tasks relating to the book. The literacy menu tasks focus on the skills of predicting, making connections and summarising. This week we will be introducing small reading groups on Google Meet. In these sessions students will be working with their class teacher on the vocabulary component of the literacy menu.  Students will receive a notification on Seesaw to inform them of the day of their reading group Google Meet. This will be the same day and time for the next five weeks.

Writing

The focus in writing over the coming weeks will be in introducing and developing the five stages of the writing process. These sequenced stages are prewriting (planning), drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Students will work through each stage, culminating in them publishing a piece of writing.

Word Study

This week students are encouraged to keep practicing their automatic recall of the 'codes' (sounds patterns) by referring to the flashcard videos and saying them with the teacher.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra

The students will be looking at Number Patterns for the next two weeks. They will be learning to describe, continue, and create number patterns and use a function machine to apply mathematical rules to numbers. They will be completing the online pre-assessment on Essential Assessment. We ask that you encourage your child(ren) to complete these tasks as independently as possible.

Measurement and Geometry.

The focus in this area of Mathematics for the upcoming three weeks is Length. Through a variety of hands on, practical activities students will develop an understanding of length as an attribute of measurement. This week the students will complete a pre-assessment task on Essential Assessment. We ask that you encourage your child(ren) to complete these tasks as independently as possible. Using their body and household items they will estimate, measure and compare measurement lengths.

Unit of Inquiry

This term we begin a new unit of inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme; 'Sharing the Planet'. This focuses on individual's responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things. We will inquire into sustainable and non-sustainable practices, related consequences and sustainability. We will use a variety of online resources to build student knowledge and consider practical solutions for personal change.

Wellbeing

Student well being will continue to be a strong focus as we enter into another period of remote learning.  This week the students are being asked create a poster showing lots of different ways they can be kind to themselves.  Ideally they will include strategies that support both their physical and emotional well being.
