Visual Communication Design

Year 9 VCD ‘Mini Me’

In Semester 1, the Year 9 Visual Communication Design students learnt how to use the Design Process used by all professional designers in industry. Their Brief was to design their own ‘Mini Me’ avatar. Each student’s unique avatar was inspired by their own personality and things that are important to them. They used research and design thinking skills, visualisation and development drawings to create their original designs. The students then refined their avatars using the professional software program Adobe Illustrator to finalise and present their designs.

The students should be very proud of their final design work.

On Tuesday 21 July, the Unit 2 Art students had an amazing opportunity to commence their self-portrait oil painting under the tuition of artist John Lawry.  Students followed the art process in preparation for the incursion. Various self-portrait digital photographs were taken, with the aim of capturing the emotion students were trying to convey about themselves. Using the class projector, students traced their composition onto a 12” x 16” canvas. Then, using acrylic paint blocked in the basic colours evident in their photograph. The class also completed painting exercises to familiarise themselves with the medium.  Overall, the day was a success. Some feedback from students about the day:

“It was a great experience and I’ve come away from it knowing a lot more than I anticipated I would’ve learnt!"

"It's very difficult to work with oil paint since there are heaps of processes to it. While painting John guided and taught us tips, I learned several new perspectives and techniques while painting that concentrated on tone and contrast. This was a great opportunity, I look forward to finishing my artwork with these skills."

"I really enjoyed the incursion with John as I was able to learn alot from him. It was cool to watch an experienced artist complete such seemingly difficult areas with ease. The overall experience was really positive and I honestly wished I could’ve just stayed longer to paint as time went by way too quickly."

The photos show the progress of the students working on their painting. Once the paintings are completed, I will share the finished artworks.
