5-8 Community News

Dear Families and Caregivers,

A big shout out to yourselves and your children for the way they have continued to conduct themselves during Remote learning 2.0. Again, we find ourselves starting our days in Zoom, exploring Hangouts, and looking to Classrooms and Sites for the lessons for the day.   Please continue to seek out your child's TA for any concerns you have with their learning outcomes. It's important to remember that the remote learning timetable looks different and I have no doubt the children are aiming to pack in as much as they can to get the 1:30 pm finish, especially while the days have been wonderful.

6-8 Partnerships for the Future

The 6-8 Partnerships students and teachers continued on with their theme 'Movement Monday'.  This week's challenge was to have all students get outside and to demonstrate and perform the following physical activities:

  • Push-ups
  • Sit-ups
  • Tricep dips
  • Squats

Students worked independently to perform these activities where they had to see how many of these exercises they could do in one minute. Not only did they smash this activity, but they gave Mr Carver, Carli and Mr Poppa a run for their money. Below is Mr Carver performing what looks to be the correct technique for a push up.

A big shout out to the following students:

Remaining 'safe' while using school devices online:

Despite our lessons being online, using the internet and school-wide software programs for classes remains vitally important. We would like to remind both parents and students that during the period of remote learning it is important that students use their devices for a means of connecting with their learning outcomes, College, their TA, and to receive any important messages.  Here are some tips for setting up a successful online space for your child at home:

Mr. Poppa's top tips for creating safer spaces for young people online:

  • Have responsive, trusted adults moderating, safeguarding, and supporting young people online at all times during remote learning. This looks like setting up a learning space where you can monitor the children's screen.
  • Enable young people to control and edit their own privacy settings quickly and easily eg. what's appropriate to share online and what isn't
  • Make terms, conditions and rules of engagement upfront, transparent and easy for them to understand. Setting boundaries is really important.
  • Refer to our school-wide SOLE matrices as a means for supporting your children.

From Our 5-8 Community Leaders

Hi Parents, Caregivers, and fellow students,

We hope remote learning is going well for you all!

As your 5-8 Community Leaders and on behalf of the 5-8 Leadership Team, we would like to give you some strategies to help keep healthy, active, and most importantly, away from your devices.

Piper's tips:

I would like to recommend going for a walk. This sounds like such a simple thing to do, but it helps so much! Before your TA, I recommend going for a walk. (Remember to ask your parents if you are allowed to, and if needed get a parent/guardian to accompany you!) Even if it’s just for a quick walk around the block - I think it will help you to concentrate (I mean it helps me!). Oh wait, let me add in - it doesn’t have to be walking. You could skate, scooter, ride, run or anything you like! You could even learn a new skill by just doing it every morning to get some exercise (I personally prefer to skate, except when I fall off, then I’d rather be walking). If you don’t have time in the morning then just try to slot in some amount of time (I only say the morning because it’s nice and cold and frosty).

Isla's tips:

Find something you enjoy! Doing something you enjoy will make you feel happier and calmer. It would be great if you could do this away from your device. Give your minds and eyes a break from your screen.

Complete this activity/hobby when you have finished your work. Here are some examples of things you could do:

Drawing, painting, writing, shooting hoops, kicking a ball, reading, cooking or gardening. You could even ask a family member in your house to have some fun with you!!

Ethan's tips:

Spend as much time as you can with those people that you care about. Whether it be spending time with friends on a call or family members in person I believe that it will help you a lot.

I would also highly encourage you to try and learn how to do something new. This could be something like learning how to ride a bike without training wheels or learning how to do a flip on a trampoline. If you try to learn how to do something new, try to make it something that you would enjoy.

General advice:

Finally, we would like to encourage eating breakfast. As they say ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’.

Also, try to stay in (or even start) a routine. Try getting to bed early one night and try waking up at 6:30-6:45 am. At the moment, the sunrise is at 6:57 am so if you get up earlier you can have a chance to have a look! (Photographers this is a good chance for you guys). On top of that, we would also like to encourage working in different spaces, this could be outside, on the couch or at the dinner table. By doing this you might be able to find somewhere better to work than if you normally work in your room, and you will be able to spend some time with your family while working.
