Celebrating Our Students

Year 7 Badminton Wins Gippsland Finals

On Friday 26th July, Bairnsdale SC travelled to Morwell Leisure Centre to compete in the Gippsland Finals for badminton. The team had practised hard (three times a week during lunchtimes) in the lead up to the day. Bairnsdale SC had stiff competition with Sale SC, Northern Districts SC and Chairo Christian School the opponents for the day. The team of William Martin, Hien Khanh (Katherine) Luu, Veshnevy (Devi) Kalaiselvan and Anshkirat (Ansh) Gill performed brilliantly throughout the day.

The match against Chairo was a great start to the day, with all players performing brilliantly, coming away with a 6 sets to 0 win. The second match was against Northern Districts, which was a tight, tense set of matches, but BSC came away with the win 3 sets all, but won on points 112-101.  This set up a wonderful opportunity for Bairnsdale, win against Sale and they go through to the State Finals. The team rose to the occasion, and smashed Sale SC 6 sets to 0, and doubled the number of points won. Apart from winning, the team were exemplary role models, with their conduct, sportsmanship, and character on display being of the highest order. A true example of our school community.

A big congratulations to our year 7 team! Thanks to Peter Johnson for coaching and driving them. The team now has 6 weeks to train hard for the State Finals to be held in Melbourne.

Attached are photos of the winning team (Ansh, Katherine, Devi and William), and a photo of Andrew Marks (Convenor) presenting the winning pennant to William (on behalf of the team).

Celebration Assembly - Friday, August 9 at Midday

We feel as a College we have a huge amount to celebrate and acknowledge.  It is important that our students are recognised for their achievements and positive contributions.  This builds a positive culture within the school and helps to establish an expectation that we are all aiming to be the best we can be together.    The College does this through feedback to students individually in classrooms and Hubs but also as groups through assemblies.

On August 9th starting at 12:00pm we will be holding a Whole School Celebration Assembly.  We invite all our parents and guests to this assembly in Boucher Hall on the Wallace St Campus.

Year 7 Standout Performers in Progress Reports

Every four weeks during the year staff at Bairnsdale Secondary report to students, parents and carers the student’s progress, work completion, use of class time and behaviour and respect in each subject.  Each component is reported on a scale of 0-4.

The staff track each student score across the year and use this information to plan individually for each student.   We can also look at the whole school data and plan an approach for a specific group of students if required.

The average score for Behaviour and Respect across the College on the last progress report for semester 1 was 3.31 out of 4.  As always there are behaviours and actions that all of us can be working on but an average of 3.31 should be celebrated.  This indicates that our students are living the school values of respect for self, others and the environment inside our classrooms overwhelmingly most of the time.

There were several students at each year level across semester 1 that were standout performers on their progress reports.  This means they were rated a 4 in every category, in every subject in all 3 progress reports for the semester.  All these students will be recognised at the Celebration Assembly in two weeks' time.  In this edition of the newsletter we would like to highlight the list of year 7 students who achieved this milestone:

Charlotte Collier, Tailor Lee Hall, Molly Hansford, Veshnery Kalaiselvam, Oliver Lambert, Daniel Lawrence, Hien Khan Luu, Sabrina Murphy, Pauline Onte and Matilda Reid.

Well done to all of you.  Pictured below are Daniel Lawrence, Matilda Reid and Pauline Onte of 7N.

Student Achievement During Holidays

It continues to be pleasing to see how many of our students are actively involved in the wider community.  Our students were in involved in the ‘Welcome Baby to Country’ ceremony during NAIDOC week in the second week of the holidays.  Well done to all the students who designed possum skin ceremonial gifts to welcome the babies to the local community.

Year 8 student, Rohnan Hudson also was prominent in the local community during NAIDOC week featuring his artwork at the local art gallery.  The school looks forward to one day hopefully displaying some of Rohnan’s art within the school as part of our student displays.

Lastly, there were many of our students who continue to be the best they can be on the sporting fields around East Gippsland.  Several of our students featured in events held in Melbourne also over the break.  Curtis Hood, RJ Farnham and Boris Bryant, all year 10, deserve special recognition for their efforts in getting selected into the Laguntas Program. Supported by the AFL, the Korin Gomandji Institute (KGI) and AFL SportsReady, the aim of the program is to further develop the pathway to the AFL competition for Indigenous players, as well as providing training and education to support the off field development of young up and coming Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders.  When asked about their involvement in the program, Boris replied: ‘Well I was obviously captain.’  It would seem the program has done a good job on developing a strong sense of belief in the boys! Well done Boris, RJ and Curtis.

Latrell Harrison, year 7, also travelled to Melbourne during the holidays to represent Bairnsdale at a state wide basketball tournament.  Latrell was named Most Valuable Player for his team.  Well done Latrell, a great achievement.  A picture of Latrell and Boris is below.

Intermediate VCAL - Japanese Celebration Garden

A class of VCAL Intermediate students have been involved in the design and construction of a garden at the front of the school to celebrate the sister school relationship Bairnsdale Secondary College and Yaei High School.

The relationship has been in existence for 20 years and is one of the longest partnerships with any school in Victoria.

The garden includes plants native to Japan. Next week when the students and staff visit from the Japanese school the garden will be completed. Students and staff from both schools will be invited to finish the garden with the planting of trees and the completion of the path. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled detailing the significance of the partnership between the two schools.

The college would like to acknowledge the help of Grant Sanderson and the college maintenance team for their work with the garden also.
