12 Skill Challenge - Throwing/Catching

Equipment required:

2 x tennis balls

Beanbag (a small soft toy or pair of folded adult socks will do)

Wall space

Teaching Points:

•    Look at the ball in the air and watch it land into your hands

•    Put your little fingers together and make a “birds’ nest or bowl” for a  2 handed catch

•    Stand with you your feet shoulder width apart

•    To catch have your elbows in front of your body

•    Try to move your hands with the ball so that your hands are relaxed and soft when you catch the ball.

Watch the following video LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk59o3zJ3w0 and go through the skills with Cam. Remember if you can do a trick 5 times in a row move onto the next challenge. If you find a skill too hard keep practicing. Throw the ball up to head height or just above.

The wall challenge is to see how many left to right then right to left handed catches you can do in 30 seconds. Have an extra ball handy and if you drop the ball after say 4 catches, the next successful catch is 5.

Do the skills again using 1 hand or your non-dominant hand to catch, eg if you write with your right hand, use your left.

Additional Activities.

1) Make up your own 12 skill challenge to test mum, dad or a brother or sister.

2) Go back to the soccer skills from last week and see what areas you can improve on :

Art - Tuesday

Task:

This week we are going to do some work  based on the final element of art, light and shade (also known as value).

Today, you are going to have a go using some drawing techniques to practice different ways to shade. Open up the task sheet so you can see what you need to do.You can either print out the page or draw up the template in your book. Keep your work in your Specialist home learning book. You can also see the example below to see how to do the different shading techniques.

Visual Example:

You will need:

A grey lead pencil

The task sheet attached to look at or print

TIP: For a light shade of grey you need to press lightly with your grey lead pencil. For a darker shade of grey you need to press harder.

For Parents:

Have a discussion with your child - what are the six elements of art you have been looking at in art?

Which shading technique did you like?

Which shading technique was most challenging to use?

Performing Arts - Thursday

Week 5

This week we are thinking about creating a voice for our character.

You’re going to need paper/notebook and a pencil for today’s lesson, access to the internet, and something to record your voice with (iPad or phone, or computer).

Be prepared to use your voice in lots of different and creative ways J

Task 1: Take a look at this Youtube clip:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjbPszSt5Pc

Think: When you watch this clip, take a close look at how the actor changes and manipulates his mouth and body to change his voice.

Task 2: Now let’s warm-up our own voices before we start.

The voice is a powerful acting tool. But the power is lost if an actor mumbles their lines or can’t be heard. Vocal exercises help to strengthen your voice.

Warm-up 1:  Work the face

Scrunch your face up tight, then yawn it out as far as it will go. Repeat 4-5 times.

Warm-up 2:  Chew

Imagine you are chewing. Move your jaw in different ways to show what you are chewing in your mouth. Try showing:

  • bubble gum (1 piece, 2 pieces, 3 pieces)
  • thick peanut butter
  • carrots
  • teeny tiny biscuits
  • stale toffee

Warm-up 3:  Tongue Twisters

Say each of these tongue-twister five times each, as quickly as possible!

  • An annoying noise annoys an oyster
  • Six thick thistle sticks
  • What gall to play ball in this small hall
  • A hotch-potch, moss-blotched, botched scotch block
  • Around the rough and rugged rock the ragged rascal ran

Task 3: Now that your voice is nicely warmed up, you’re going to try out a few different voices before choosing one for your character.

In your notebook (or on paper) make a list of 5-6 celebrities or cartoon characters… Now have a go at doing a voice for each of them. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bad impersonation, the funnier, the better. Just have a go!

Remember: When you watched the Youtube clip earlier, remember how the actor changed his mouth and body in order to change his voice?

Think: How can changing the shape of your mouth, or the movement of your lips or tongue, help to create the voice for each of the characters on your list?

Task 4 : Now that you’ve had a go at trying out a few different voices, you’re going to have a go at creating a voice for your character!

Once you’ve come up with a voice, record yourself speaking as your character. Just a few lines is fine: maybe introduce yourself as your character.

Now try recording a second time with a contrasting/different voice to see what kind of voice best suits your character.

Once you’ve decided what kind of voice your character has, you’re ready for next week’s lesson!
