Principal's Post

Dear Parents,

The 2019 Premier’s Awards for VCE Excellence were announced during the week. Mazenod is delighted have three recipients.

Sam Warner was one of 28 students across the State who was awarded a Premier’s Award for All Round High Achiever.

Jordan Bassilious was awarded a Premier’s Award for English.

Sean Ng was awarded a Premier’s Award for Computing: Software Development

The criteria for the awards is based on their performance in their 3 / 4 subjects so congratulations also to Ms Clare Caldwell who was Jordan’s English teacher and Mr Ian Steel who taught Sean in Software Development. An All Round High Achiever Award includes all of Sam’s subjects so congratulations to Mr Robert Trafficante (Italian), Mr Nick Young (Global Politics), Mr Jed Harrington (English Literature), Mr Simon Conlan (English), Mr Rob Mann (History) and Ms Tina Giacco (Religion & Society). Sam would attribute his success to all his teachers over the years and the dedication of Ms Jo Caird who has guided him with his interest in Public Speaking & Debating.

Noah Andrews and Mateo Acosta Fernandez are preparing for the PESA (Plain English Speaking Award) run by VCAA. The State heats are being conducted during May. Good luck gentlemen.

Our Year 10 students have completed the Morrisby Testing for Careers Guidance and now the task of completing the 250 interviews is being done. Ms Seremetis and Mr Weegberg are working through the schedule and the feedback so far is that the testing, the reports and the interviews are very enlightening and positive. It is a huge undertaking and the Remote Learning has enabled a few parents to be there for the interviews as well, which has proven productive. Morrisby is a tremendous tool that is will support students during the subject selection process in term 3 and beyond. All the students require an interview so it is very helpful if they are available for their scheduled appointment.

During this time of Remote and Flexible Learning teachers and students are being very innovative. Mrs Weegberg has her own Youtube channel of cooking that rivals Masterchef or My Kitchen Rules. Ms Elliott has been asked to produce video clips that are featuring on the International stage with the International Boys Coalition Forums espousing the essential ingredients of an on line platform while students from around the world are in lockdown. Our Design and Technology teachers are creating ways of using our 3D printers to provide medical supplies for face masks for local hospitals. The coding for the PPE material was established in Iona College which is our Oblate College in Brisbane and they are currently producing a significant amount of essential PPE equipment.

Finally, we are looking at ways to recognise and celebrate Mothers’ Day for 2020. Mass will be celebrated at 8am on Friday 8th May in our College Chapel. Mass and can be accessed by MAZCOM. We are also inviting students to pay tribute to their Mums and Grandmothers next week on various forms of school social media and MAZCOM. The Mothers’ Association have included details of ways to be involved in the Newsletter and Homeroom teachers and Year Level Coordinators will provide students with details as well.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Tony Coghlan
