World's Greatest Shave

While a bit daunting at first, the SRC team finally executed their first fundraiser of the year and I think it’s safe to say that it was one of the best ones yet, raising an amount that ranks in the top ten of all the schools in Victoria. However, it wasn’t without its fair share of complications. With Koonung’s new timetabling and some of our general ignorance as to how these things were done (don’t even get me started on ordering the food), it wasn’t even until the last few hours that Vanessa and I were finally convinced that it wasn’t going to be a disaster.

When it came down to it, the whole SRC and leadership team banded together, and with a little bit of frantic scrabbling about we finally got everything sorted and ready for the big day. Just in time, the trestle tables were set up, the bake sale prepared, drinks set out, balloons sticky tapped haphazardly across the amphitheatre and the tongs were finally found to turn the sausages on the barbeque.

This year we partnered up with Box Hill Institute who agreed to provide volunteer barbers and to our delight, instead of the lone student we were expecting, we received a whole army of barbers who immediately set up shop as we all braced ourselves for the onslaught that is a Koonung sausage sizzle.

The amphitheatre was as packed as it had ever been, this was most likely because we had eleven people, including three extraordinarily brave girls who agreed to shave all of the hair off their heads. Friends and family poured in to offer support and take photos. Ultimately the day was insane, we were constantly on our feet and it felt like a million things were about to go wrong but when we finally crossed the $5,000 mark off our giant thermometer and everyone behind us cheered I knew that, not only had the day been a success but all the stress and hardship that preceded became irrelevant and almost childish for the reward it reaped.

Raising $6,000 we’d just like to thank from the bottom of our hearts the wonderful volunteers from Box Hill Institute who we hope continue our partnership with for years to come, of course, Mr. Kofoed who worked tirelessly with Vanessa and me, giving up much of his time to help us pull everything together,  the brave students and teachers for shaving their heads and raising money amongst themselves all to be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation and all the students, parents and teachers who help out on the day and before to ensure that this World Greatest Shave would remain one to remember.
