What's happening in Food Technology?

Recently during the French exchange program, the Food Technology team hosted a hands on ANZAC biscuit cooking class. We welcomed the opportunity to enrich our French visitors with a typically Australian recipe. The French students were very excited and enjoyed their time making and tasting our national ANZAC biscuit. However, with over 20 French students the kitchen very quickly and delightfully morphed into a sweet sounding French Patisserie.  As the class came to an end we exchanged our farewells. Every student left with a little parcel of oaty golden joy, and just in case they want to make them again, a recipe as well. Ovwar, until next time.

Urban Art

The Year 9 Urban Art class was fortunate to spend an afternoon with a street artist, Michael Duncan from LOSOP Stencils. He engaged the students with practical activities which included creating, cutting out and spray painting their own stencil. The students were introduced to a variety of painting techniques which they all successfully incorporated into their own artwork. We will be using the information gained from this incursion to compliment our Urban Art projects that will start to appear around the school very soon!

Woodblock Printing Incursion

The City of Whitehorse has a Sister City relationship with Matsudo, a Japanese city on the outskirts of Tokyo. Each year Box Hill Community Arts Centre celebrates this relationship with a series of workshops and a Matsudo Week Exhibition.  This year Box Hill Community Arts Centre has invited Koonung students  to participate in a series of free printmaking workshops to create work for the exhibition which is on from May 1-13 at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.  The exhibition is titled Matsudo Week Exhibition Mokuhanga: The Tradition of Japanese Woodblock Printing. Mokuhanga is the traditional water based printing technique, originating in China and perfected in Japan. The process uses wood, pigment and hand made paper.  There are no printing presses involved.  The workshops will be conducted by Terry McKenna, a professional mokuhanga artist and principal teacher at the Australian Mokuhanga School. I have attached a link to Terry’s website for your information.

The artwork produced in the workshops would be professionally mounted for the exhibition.

Students would get their artwork back at the end of the show.
