Year 7 Numeracy

In the Classroom

During year 7’s first unit of Developing Number Sense, we have wrestled many problems; what is a perfect number? How abundant is 12? Is the Collatz Conjecture true for all integers? What temperature range wound you experience on Mercury. How many equations can be created using BIDMAS and just four 4’s. If we are restricted to a perimeter of 100cm, how can I maximise area?

Math about me with Ms Chandrasekaran

Activity review

Math about me is an introductory activity I did with my class; it was a fun activity where students were encouraged to demonstrate their ability to write their own statements to share information about themselves. Students write down the numbers in their lives and then represent it using pictures. It was a great way to get to know your students and break the ice on the first day of class. I did this activity with my Year 7 class and my students seemed to enjoy this very much as they realised how maths is involved in their daily lives. They also understood that maths is not just a simple subject they learn in school and is in fact one of the subjects that is always integrated in their lives.
