Soup? Soul Food!

We have been enjoying some warming soup at lunchtime lately – with our own produce from the garden! (and a bit extra from Foodbank). It has caused me to reflect on the legends surrounding minestrone soup – literally meaning ‘to serve’ or ‘to administer a remedy’.

Stories are told of a soup prepared with whatever was on hand in monasteries in Italy to be shared with weary travellers or local people who were in need. A bowl of minestrone symbolises warming hospitality; a simple act of service to meet the most immediate need of the stranger or the person ‘doing it tough’.

We see this reflected in ‘Soup Kitchens’ in our own communities; or the great work of Foodbank Victoria. It is worth remembering and being thankful for the wonderful volunteers that give their time and effort ‘to serve’ those in need. This simple act of kindness; sharing food – does more than fill the stomach – it can fill the soul!
