Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Programme

This term some of our indigenous students from Year 8 and Year 9 have had the opportunity to learn about the local culture, language and history of the Anaiwan people and other regional groups. They heard about the lives of Aboriginal people during early settlement and the role of the Aboriginal Protection Board from Dave Widders. They also learnt words from the Anaiwan language taught in the traditional way by Callum Clayton-Dixon.

Year 8 and Year 9 students have also made regular visits to the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place where they studied Aboriginal artists, painted their own boomerangs and learnt traditional ways of weaving.

The term culminated in an excursion to Mount Yarrowyck Nature Reserve where Darrell Ahoy and Callum McIntosh/ from National Parks helped us interpret the rock paintings and introduced us to some of the local bush tucker.

Thank you to Skye Gordon Briggs and Steven Ford for their efforts in putting the program together and for their enthusiasm and the encouragement they gave to the students.

Thanks also to the staff at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre who have given their time to help the students know more about their culture.

We are hoping to continue the programme with more students involved in Term 4.
