Monet

This term in Visual Arts all students at Trinity have been exploring the theme of ‘Time’ through investigation of different concepts and related subject matter, artists, and mediums. In Grades Prep and One, students have learnt about french impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh, and how he demonstrated time in his artworks by depicting the different seasons of: Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring. They created their own standing tree using the colours associated with each season, and different types of line inspired by Van Gogh’s obvious brush strokes. Tying in with Science Week, students investigated how a life cycle of a frog demonstrates time. They used resources they had at home to create a sculpture of each phase of a frog’s life. Students learnt about the french impressionist artist Claude Monet, who is well known for his dreamy artworks of his vibrant gardens and lily pads. Students created their own lily pad using watercolour paint (or markers/ink) and recreated Monet’s style by layering different shades of green.

In Grade Two, Three, and Four, students have learnt about the impressionist movement of art and its focus on the outdoors, the environment, and landscapes, as opposed to creating realistic artworks. They learnt about French impressionist artist Claude Monet, and examined the numerous artworks by him that depict the seasons. Students chose one of Monet’s artworks of a season, and used it as inspiration for their own landscape artwork. They layered watercolour paint (or markers/ink), markers, and crayons/pencils to create a mixed media artwork. Students explored the process of working with a wet medium, and the importance of allowing time for the canvas to dry. During Science Week, students learnt about the phases of the moon and how it can be used to represent time. They created each phase with watercolour and explored how the medium can be used to create the soft edges of the moon. Related to this, students investigated the Lunar Calendar and chinese Zodiac signs. They created an artwork inspired by Chinese Ceramic to illustrate the 2020 ‘Year of the Rat’.

In Grade 5/6 students have learnt about how artists communicate with their audience through the subject matter, composition, and colours of their artworks. Students investigated the theme of time by exploring potential future outcomes for our world. They selected from topics including: Technology, Immigration, War/Peace, and Climate Change. Students explored the works of modern day Californian artist Michael Kerbow and his interpretation of the consequences of our current actions for the future. They identified utopian (perfect society) and dystopian (frightening society) imagery in different artworks, and considered both for their own selected topics.

I have been exploring the idea of a virtual school art show, because of our inability to host our usual version this year. Below is a sample one I have made for Grade Prep/One students in Term 3. I have tried to include at least one work by each student. I will be making a Grade 2/3/4 and 5/6 version in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
