What’s on at the Alliance Française

The next Jazzy Jeudi, at the Alliance Française on Thursday 24th May, features versatile vocalist Kimba Griffith and the New Impromptu Quartet. Go to https://www.afmelbourne.com.au/culture-and-events/performing-art/jazzy-jeudi-kimba-griffith/ for more information and to book tickets.

Current art exhibition Draw at the Alliance features art created by French artist François Réau while he was the artist in residence in Shoalhaven in NSW. Réau attempts to exceed the limits of drawing by using a ‘drawing machine’ (pictured) to  render drawings in three dimensions, drawing ‘space and time as it is experienced’ by  recording movements in the outside world. The machine, as well as the resulting art, is on display at the exhibition, which is on till May 16th. For information on opening times go to https://www.afmelbourne.com.au/culture-and-events/exhibitions/draw/

French President Emmanuel Macron visits Australia

Emmanuel Macron was in Australia and the Pacific region last week, spending three days in Australia. Meeting the local French community, Macron noted that Australia is now home to over 100,000 French people and that French is the most commonly spoken European language in Australia.

Macron had talks with the Australian Government, local companies, NGOs, activists and artists around French-Australian cooperation in areas such as education, health, preservation of marine environments, arresting climate change and solar power. Macron considers that the Pacific region is the ‘area in the world where the most important adventures of the 21st Century will happen’, and said that ‘the future is filled with opportunities for synergy between our two countries’. As well as military and political discussions, Macron had lunch on Wednesday with French and Australian chefs working locally, spoke to the local French community at the AGNSW, where the famous tapestries ‘La Dame a la Licorne’ (the lady and the unicorn) from the Musée de Cluny in Paris are currently exhibited, toured an Aboriginal-themed bienniale exhibition at the Sydney Opera House which includes work by French artists, and spoke with Aboriginal artists and activists working on climate change.
