Indigenous Cultural Day

Whole School Incursion - 3rd May 2018

Recently the whole school participated in Aboriginal cultural experiences facilitated by the Koomurri group. Following the opening Welcome to Country student groups rotated through a series of traditional activities to learn about the first Australians.

"My favourite part was the boomerang throwing, learning how to throw it properly and seeing it come back. It was really cool."

Madeleine, 6GB

"The whole school was there! We watched Aboriginals do a dance they got gum tree leaves and set them on fire it was amazing . Our first activity was boomerang throwing . When it was my turn I put as much power as I could to throw it very far. We did the boomerang throwing at the park. I learnt if the boomerang does not come back you did not kill the anything . After lunch we went to get our face paint with white paint boys got stripes girls got to choose between dots or stripes the we put our finger in white paint and put it on the painted paper! I felt that the Aboriginal experience was amazing I wish we could do it every week! "

"On a very windy day we celebrated Aboriginal culture day . At the start we watched dances and one member sang along. They even put fire on 🍁 leaves I felt very welcome. Our first activity was boomerang throwing, but I didn’t get mine very far. One person got it so far it went past the path! It was incredible I learned how to throw it. Then we did Face painting I chose the dots but I thought that it wasn’t fair that all of the boys got to go first😢. Face painting was actually quite short. Last we had assembly it was fantastic. In assembly there was more dancing 💃 and volunteers were asked to come up to the stage and dance 💃 too."

Zelda, 3HK

"The whole school there waiting on the 4 Square Courts. We were waiting for our visitors. The first thing my senses picked up was there was smoke, very strong wood smoke. They had come to our school to share their culture with us. Boomerang throwing came after Welcome to Country, we went down to the park to throw boomerangs. After the first person had a throw it it was my turn. I threw it quite far. I learnt I was a great boomerang thrower. Later we attended the Farewell to Country. There was some traditional dances and some didgeridoo playing."

Sam, 3HK

"The Aboriginal people came to the assembly with flaming eucalyptus leaves. They did an Aboriginal dance. My favourite activity was boomerang throwing. I learnt that boomerangs aren’t supposed to come back to you. They are used to hunt. I also liked the weaponry and bush survival session. I learnt that Aboriginal people used tree sap on wounds and what an emu boomerang is. I felt happy that I got to do stuff I thought I would never do."
