Preps get Schooled

Excursion to Kew Traffic School

During Week 3 of Term 2, the Prep classes visited The Kew Traffic School and took part in individual sessions of its Safety Education Program. This program, led by a safety instructor, aligns with the Victorian Curriculum (including Early Years) and each session included an interactive educational presentation, a walking activity to apply the new knowledge and bike riding practice time for the children.

With roads, roundabouts, intersections, traffic lights, street signs, railway crossings and mini trams, the Kew Traffic School gave the students the opportunity to gain confidence and develop road safety skills, away from the dangers of real traffic. Given our inner-city location and the popularity of cyclists in our area, the knowledge gained from the children, teachers and parent helpers was extremely valuable.

Simple safety messages such as the  correct way to wear a seatbelt, why sitting in the backseat is important unless you are over 145cm and (you'll love this one) no arguing with siblings in the car, were emphasised.

Many bike helmets had to be properly fitted on the children’s heads. Please copy and paste the following link to read the attached document, specifically pdf. ‘Bicycle Helmets, Don’t ride without one’, to ensure that your child’s helmet is always correctly fitted.

Finally, a take home message for all of our community, next time you are exiting a vehicle try using the Dutch Reach Method to prevent additional injuries on our roads. Our Cyclers will thank you for it.
