Multicultural Cook Off 2018

Mr Nyrinhen’s Year 9 Food Technology class united today with seniors from Afghanistan, Burma, Iran, Spain, & Vietnam. Student’s learned from their elders how to prepare and cook dishes accustomed to these diverse cultures, students also felt proud catering their recipes to friends, visitors & their school. A fabulous time was had by all as we came together with the sharing of ‘food’.

Year 9 Food Technology & Lake Illawarra High School would like to thank the Seniors for sharing their recipes and volunteering their time, the visitors for visiting and the Shellharbour Club for funding the event.

Congratulations Mr Nyrinhen, Mrs Cormack, Mrs Hobson &  the Year 9 Food Technology class on such a wonderful event. The food was glorious!

SRC Colour Run

In week 8 of Term 3 the SRC embarked on our biggest fundraiser 'Week 8 Great,' There was a different activity held each day  where  the  focus  was  on  mental health, student  physical activity, trivia, multiculturalism,  and  finishing  off  with our 2nd Annual Colour Run.

On Monday the students made milkshakes at lunchtime and shared messages of positive mental health all while music was playing in the quad. Tuesday was 'Tournament Tuesday' where a variety of sports were played around the school at lunchtime. 'Worldwide Wednesday' involved foods from around the

world being sold at lunchtime, We had a mobile wood fire pizza van, tacos, hot dogs and a BBQ. 'Trivia Thursday' was followed by our Fun Run Friday where 150 students completed our obstacle course on the Western Fields while getting covered in coloured powder.

It was a great week that raised money for the SRC and built on school spirit and student"engagement.

Thank you to Year 10 students Tahni Anger, Caieta Bazzano and Claudia Balatti for coming up with this idea.

Cheers Mr McAndrew, Mr Price - SRC Coordinators.

'Lake' artists feature in Sculpture's at Killalea

Building on last year’s entry in the Southern Illawarra’s version of ‘Sculpture by the Sea’, this year, our students had two exhibits at the local ‘Sculpture’s at Killalea’ exhibition. The event attracted a multitude of sculptures from around Australia and additionally, entries from a range of both primary and secondary schools.

Our two entries focused on the beach and coastline for inspiration but were vastly different. Harbour Centre students created quirky sticky tape sculptures of iconic objects that are representative of summer, surf and fun at the beach. Suitably named ‘Symbols of Summer’, this work featured, for example, thongs, snorkels and goggles, swimming rings, a surfboard, beach cricket gear and a small human form. The sculptures were suspended and placed around a tree which overlooked ‘The Farm’ beach.

The second work featured actual thongs which were painted on by year 7 students. In addition to referencing the site for its fame as a beach, this work also acknowledged the ‘footprint’ made by aboriginal people in the area. As a part of our school’s NAIDOC week celebrations earlier in the year, every Year 7 student was given a rubber thong and after a lesson on Aboriginal art and culture (which included a look at contemporary dot painting techniques) each student decorated their thong with patterns that were inspired by the dot painting techniques. Coincidentally, as only women’s and girls’ thongs were available for purchase at the time, we also acknowledged this year’s NAIDOC celebrations focused on the role and strength of Aboriginal women.

Over the two weeks the exhibition was held, huge crowds visited the event and it was most pleasing to see large numbers of people carefully looking at and appreciating the work of our students.

Well done Lake artists!

Farewell and Thank you Deb

This week we bid farewell to Debbie Tuite, who has worked in the Harbour Centre since 2009.  Debbie has supported a large number of students in her time here at Lake Illawarra and in her previous job at Keelong.

Debbie has always provided a steady and calming influence with everyone that she has had contact with and she will be missed greatly by both staff and students.

We wish her all the best in her retirement.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Promoting Positive Behaviour for Learning.

As a PBL school LIHS rewards students who are respectful, responsible and safe in every setting.

Our school values:

RESPECT ⎜RESPONSIBILITY ⎜SAFETY

All classes have recently completed a ‘Right Place, Right Time’ and ‘Manners’ lessons. These presentations generated great discussion and problem-solving ideas.

Future specific PBL lessons will continue to occur so as to further create safe, effective teaching and learning environments.

We show RESPECT by being tolerant and accepting everyone, being polite and considerate of others. Using appropriate language and wearing school uniform.

We show RESPONSIBILITY by being at the right place, right time. Staying on task in class and being prepared. Following procedures and instructions including putting rubbish in the bin and caring for our surroundings.

We show SAFETY by following instructions. Following a 'hands off' policy and having a smoke free zone.

Weekly PBL Focus Values throughout Term 3 will continue to remain a high priority in all settings. Specific PBL lessons will also continue to occur so as to encourage active learning in classrooms around the school.

Focus of the Fortnight is: RESPONSIBILITY

We show responsibility when we follow teacher instructions promptly.

Students will be on time for school and their next class.

VIVOs will be rewarded to all students who are prompt to school/class and exhibit appropriate behaviour both in the classroom and the playground.

We show responsibility when we take every opportunity to succeed.
