Winter Sleepout

On this Friday the 24th August, the annual Winter Sleepout will be taking place. This year we are really trying to raise awareness about poverty and homelessness. The money raised will be split in between two organisations, which are St Vincent De Paul and Backpack Beds for the Homeless. The St Vincent de Paul Society members and volunteers reach out to the most vulnerable in our community through our Conferences, Special Works and Vinnies shops. Members and volunteers assist people in need and do not discriminate against cultural, religious or political beliefs. Backpack Beds for the Homeless are a local organisation that have created a swag that gets rolled into a backpack and every swag that gets bought, they donate one to the homeless. The plan is to be able to buy 2-3 swags, and then we will also donate the swags we buy, so there should be 4-6 swags getting donated to the homeless in Melbourne. Any donations give to either Dylan Wakarchuk, Sophie White, Emma Pocock or Mr Williams, it would be greatly appreciated.

House Competition: Avila

Between the 13 – 17 August St. Peter's College East Avila House hosted a House Competition.

The theme: Pop- Up Events.  Points were awarded to all individuals for participation and for successfully winning challenges, with the competition intensifying each day with new challenges on offer to accumulate points for their House.  All points awarded contributed to the overall House tally to determine the official House rankings to receive all important points in the Rosemary Graham Shield competition, which will be awarded at the end of Term 3.

A variety of events were on offer each lunchtime to promote enjoyment at lunchtime and building student relationships.

Monday’s Challenge: Speed "dating" rather speed new friendships challenged the students to step out of their comfort zone and meet someone new in the school and tested their memory skills. The buzz in the room from the conversation proved it was a huge success.

Tuesday’s Challenge: Snap was a hit, with the classroom bursting with students all intensely focussed and eager to beat their peers with quick reflexes. Squeals and laughter filled the room as the competition intensified.

Wednesday’s Challenge: Cup stacking demonstrated speed, concentration and balance as all the students raced against each other ‘relay style’ to arrange and disassemble their 10 cup towers.

Thursday’s Challenge: ‘Basketball Shoot Out’ attracted the students en-mass with the basketball court packed with participants lined up to try and out score their opponents to with successful shots at goal.

Friday’s Challenge: Soccer Goal Kick was super competitive with Assisi needing to score 24 goals more overtake Glowery for first position in the overall rankings. This did not stop Avila and Augustine being serious contenders as they put up a tremendous fight against Glowery and Assisi.

As the week unfolded and the competition intensified as the students waited in anticipation each morning to find out what the new daily challenge would be and how they could get involved, be a part of the fun and get into the spirit of supporting their House's by' 'having a go'.

The event proved to be a great success making our lunchtimes more entertaining and promoting enhanced student relationships, uniting students across all 7-12 year levels.

St Vinnie’s Winter Blanket Appeal

Having a warm, comfortable bed to lie on at night is something most people take for granted but for many experiencing homelessness it is a luxury they cannot afford. That is why Students and Staff at St. Peter’s College in Cranbourne are asking for your help by way of donations of new (or good quality clean) sleeping bags, quilts and blankets.

“We know that at this time of year Vinnies run dangerously low on warm sleeping materials and are calling on our community to help to donate new, adult sized, good quality sleeping bags. They would also love brand new quilts and blankets to distribute”.

“While a sleeping bag is a long way from a comfortable bed in a warm, safe room, it can still make a difference for people who are sleeping rough during these cold winter days and nights.

“Year on year we have seen an increase in the number of people who are homeless, yes in our local area, and with the nights getting colder, demand for blankets and sleeping bags is very high. A good sleeping bag, warm quilt or thick blanket is vitally important for people who are sleeping rough to protect them from the elements at night and help prevent a decline in health.”

Donations can be dropped at either Campus Reception or money can be donated and staff will negotiate a bulk purchase.  Pricing for the blankets is as follows:

Baby Blanket  $5

Adult Blanket $ 10

Please help us achieve our aim.
