Year 5-6 Update.

Welcome to Term 4!

Welcome back to all families and our Grade 5-6 students. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are all rested and ready for an exciting term of LEARNING!

Term 4 is a really special term for our Grade 5/6’s.

In Reading, the Grade 5/6 students will be learning about the comprehension strategies ‘Analysing and Critiquing’. As part of this unit, students will be developing their ability to talk about the important parts of non-fiction and fiction texts. Additionally our students will critically analyse the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text to enhance their skill of this strategy.  The Grade 6’s will also be applying their reading strategies to study the novel Girl Underground, and working towards writing an essay about this text.

In Writing, the Grade 5 students will be learning how to write a Narrative text. Narratives provides our students with the opportunity to share their imagination, creativity, skill, and understanding of nearly all elements of writing.  Students are able to put their creative hats on and create a well-structured detailed writing piece.

In Term 4, the Grade 6’s will be writing memoirs about their time at primary school, including their favourite memories and their aspirations for the future. These will be published into a yearbook to celebrate moving to the next stage in their lives.

In Mathematics, students will apply learned strategies and skills when investigating and solving problems within the mathematical area of Place Value. Students will learn to confidently convert between fractions, decimals and percentages as well as applying their learning to a range of problems involving using tools such as number lines and area models.

As part of Integrated Studies this term Grade 5 students will be taking part in a program called “Kidpreneur”. Kidpreneur allows our students to work collaboratively to create a business including designing a product, posters and logos to sell in a hope to raise money for a chosen charity. Grade 6 students will be given the opportunity to take part in a range of electives, allowing them to study Science, Music, Outdoor Education and Home Economics and engage in topics alongside their classmates.

We are looking forward to working with you to make this final term, the best possible,
