Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student News

Last week, staff members Cathy Downes and Shirley Johnson, joined 30 others from our Diocese in making up part of a crowd of 500 at the 2 day Catholic Schools NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander State Education Conference. The conference, titled ‘Transforming With The Spirit’ encompassed the following themes:

  • What needs to be said?
  • What needs to be heard?
  • What needs to be experienced?
  • What needs to be enacted?

These were explored through looking at

  • Community Connectedness and Pathways
  • Aboriginal Spirituality and Dreaming
  • History, Story and Journey
  • Healing and Reconciliation

The celebration of stories, dances and ceremonies demonstrated the strength of and pride held in the traditional cultural knowledge and practice within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic community in NSW.

The conference is held every 3 years, with the Diocese of Armidale being announced as the host for 2025.
