This term in Digital Photography we have been looking at the joiner artworks by David Hockney. Hockney is an English painter, print maker, stage designer and photographer and in the early 1980’s he began creating a series of intricate, complex photo collages called “joiners”.
Hockney created these pieces to portray the passing of time in a single still image, and to show reality as to how we see it, in small, separate fragments and not as one big image. By taking these separate small images, Hockney was able to choose which parts of the scene to enlarge and focus on and what parts to leave out. As well as showing the viewer every angle of the scene creating a 3D image portrayed in a 2D space, which can make the viewer feel like they are in the image themselves.
So, in class we used this technique to create a group of joiners ourselves of buildings in the school.

The photo collages you see here are skill building activities students have been completing in class, experimenting with their photography skills and Photoshop, in the lead up to their final artwork.
