We have a fabulous selection of new books that have arrived in the library this term - here are just a few that I would recommend:/Máme úžasný výběr nových knih, které nově dorazily do knihovny - zde je jen několik z nich, které bych ráda doporučila:

• All These Bodies by Kendare Blake - Sixteen bloodless bodies. Two teenagers. One impossible explanation!/šestnáct bezkrevných těl. Dva teenageři. Jedno nemožné vysvětlení!
• My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga -  a challenging read about the difficulties of a teen facing mental illness/náročné čtení o potížích dospívajícího, který čelí duševní chorobě.
• Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson - another great read in the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series/další skvělé čtení ze série Návod na vraždu pro hodné holky.
• Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak - an exploration of belonging and identity, love and trauma, nature and renewal/zkoumání sounáležitosti a identity, lásky a traumatu, přírody a obnovy
• Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake - a mind-altering journey into a hidden kingdom of life/mysl formující cesta do skrytého království života.

Dungeons and Dragons/ Jeskyně a draci

Following discussions with several students, this term we set up our first Dungeons and Dragons clubs in the library.  Two are running at lunchtime and one after school. So far it has been a challenging adventure to get our characters created following the complex D+D rules!  However, we’re all having fun and are looking forward to getting started with our new adventure together after half term! 

Po diskuzích s několika studenty jsme v tomto trimestru v knihovně  založili naše první kluby pro hru Jeskyně a draci. Dva z nich se konají v polední pauze a jeden po vyučování. Prozatím prožíváme náročné dobrodružství při vytváření našich postav podle složitých pravidel této hry! Nicméně se všichni dobře bavíme a těšíme se, že po prázdninách společně začneme s naším novým dobrodružstvím!

2022 Literary Festival/Literární festival 2022

Everything is set for a fantastic ‘in-person’ ECP Literary Festival on Tuesday 1 November.  We have a fabulous range of speakers from far and wide.  All the students in Years 1-4 will be off-timetable to enjoy the event.  Speakers include:

Ash Dickinson - one of the busiest and most booked poets in the UK!  He is a multiple slam champion and has headlined shows and festivals throughout the UK and abroad.

Jenny Valentine - an English novelist. Her first novel, Finding Violet Park, won an important fiction prize!   Since 2007 she has written several more novels and her work has been published in 19 countries and translated into more than 9 languages.

Martin Vopěnka - a Czech writer, publisher, columnist and author of 23 books.  He won a Golden Ribbon Award for best literature for youth in 2016 for Nová Planeta. All of his books have been translated into multiple languages.

Štěpánka Jislová - a Czech illustrator and comics artist.  She is the co-founder of the 

Czech branch of Laydeez do comics, an international organization that promotes female comics artists and their work and is a regular speaker at Festivals both here and abroad.

Daniela Šafránková - a Prague-based artist and author of three novels.

Vše je už připraveno na fantastický prezenční literární festival ECP, který proběhne v úterý 1. listopadu. Máme zajištěnou báječnou škálu řečníků ze širokého okolí. Všichni studenti 1.–4. ročníku si budou moci po celý školní den užívat festivalových aktivit. Mezi řečníky budou:

Ash Dickinson - jeden z nejvytíženějších a nejžádanějších básníků ve Velké Británii! Je několikanásobným šampionem ve slamech a pořádá své show a festivaly po celé Británii i v zahraničí.

Jenny Valentine - anglická autorka románů. Její první román Finding Violet Park získal významnou cenu za beletrii! Od roku 2007 napsala několik dalších románů a její práce byly publikovány v 19 zemích a přeloženy do více než 9 jazyků.

Martin Vopěnka - český spisovatel, nakladatel, fejetonista a autor 23 knih. Za svoji knihu Nová planeta získal v roce 2016 cenu Zlatá stuha za nejlepší literaturu pro mládež. Všechny jeho knihy byly přeloženy do mnoha jazyků.

Štěpánka Jislová - česká ilustrátorka a komiksová výtvarnice. Je spoluzakladatelkou české pobočky Laydeez do comics, mezinárodní organizace, která propaguje komiksové umělkyně a jejich tvorbu a pravidelně vystupuje na festivalech u nás i v zahraničí.

Daniela Šafránková - tato výtvarnice a autorka tří románů pochází z Prahy.

Iris Book Award/Soutěž Iris Book Award

If you enjoy reading, why not consider reading for the Iris High School Book Award?  So far we have one team of students and one team of teachers who are reading the books and we are planning to have a Quiz Night based on the books next term.  This is prior to our student team competing against a group of other international schools who are also reading the books.  If you’re interested, please email me - I’d love to hear from you!

Pokud rádi čtete, proč se nezapojit do soutěžního knižního klubu Iris High School Book Award? Zatím máme jeden tým studentů a jeden tým učitelů, kteří čtou zadané knihy, a v příštím trimestru plánujeme uspořádat Kvízový večer založený na znalosti těchto knih. Tento kvíz by měl studenty připravit na soutěž se skupinou mezinárodních škol, které jsou také zapojeny. Máte-li zájem, napište mi e-mail, budu se těšit!

Reading Recommendations/Doporučená četba

One thing I love about the summer is having plenty of time to read!  Probably my favourite two reads this summer were The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce.  Harrow’s book is a fantasy adventure set in 1893 when three sisters, James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth and Beatrice Belladonna join the suffragists of New Salem and begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement!  It’s a riveting read, and as one reviewer put expressed it, it’s a “feminist adventure story … [that’s a] fierce and beautiful homage to the power of women in all their forms”.  So good, that I’ve just ordered a copy for the library and it should be arriving soon!  

Na létě miluji to, že mám spoustu času na čtení! Moje pravděpodobně nejoblíbenější knihy tohoto léta byly Čarodějnice dřívější a budoucí autorky Alix E. Harrowové a Nepravděpodobná pouť Harolda Frye od Rachel Joyce. První z knih je fantasy dobrodružství odehrávající se v roce 1893, kdy se tři sestry, James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth a Beatrice Belladonna, připojí k sufražetkám z New Salemu a začnou hledat zapomenutá slova a způsoby, které by mohly změnit ženské hnutí v hnutí čarodějnic! Je to strhující čtení a jak to vyjádřil jeden recenzent, je to „feministický dobrodružný příběh … [představující] divokou a krásnou poctu moci žen ve všech jejích podobách“. Je dobře, že jsem právě objednala jeden výtisk do knihovny a měl by brzy dorazit!

Joyce’s book, however, could not be more different - its protagonist is Harold Fry, recently retired, who lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen.  Unexpectedly, one morning he sets off to post a letter to an old colleague who is dying, but instead finds himself walking 600 miles to the hospice in which she is staying in the belief that it will help her to stay alive.  It is a beautifully poignant story that deals with loss and regret.  It is definitely one that stays with you and I found myself thinking about it a great deal after finishing it.  I’ve already recommended it to several colleagues who have also enjoyed it - so hurry and borrow it from our library now!  

Kniha Joyceové by nemohla být více odlišná – jejím hlavním hrdinou je Harold Fry, čerstvý důchodce, který žije v malé anglické vesnici se svou ženou Maureen. Jednoho rána se nečekaně vydá poslat dopis staré kolegyni, která umírá, ale místo toho zjistí, že jde 600 mil do hospicu, ve kterém žena pobývá, ve víře, že jí to pomůže zůstat naživu. Je to krásně dojemný příběh, který se zabývá ztrátou a lítostí. Určitě vás zasáhne a po dokončení knihy jsem se přistihla, že o ní hodně přemýšlím. Už jsem ji doporučila několika kolegům, kterým se také líbila – tak si ji pospěšte přečíst a půjčte si ji z naší knihovny!

Carrie by Stephen King

Hey guys, I would like to recommend this great horror!  Carrie is a teenage girl who isn’t very popular in school as everybody makes fun of her. Living with her ultra-religious mother, Carrie has a very hard time growing up. She gradually discovers her telekinetic powers and takes revenge on the whole town - especially the people in high school who bullied her. This thrilling horror by the king of horror will really get to you and is a perfect read for Halloween!

Ahoj všichni, ráda bych vám doporučila tento skvělý horor! Carrie je dospívající dívka, která není ve škole příliš oblíbená, protože si z ní všichni dělají legraci. Carrie, která žije se svou ultra pobožnou matkou, má velmi těžké období dospívání. Postupně objevuje své telekinetické schopnosti a mstí se celému městu – zejména lidem na střední škole, kteří ji šikanovali. Tento napínavý horor od krále hororů vás opravdu dostane a na Halloween je to perfektní čtení!

Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas

Throne of glass is a series, with an average of 4.5-5 star reviews, containing 8 books, one of them being a prequel to the main story. It follows the main character Celena Sardothian, a trained assassin, and her adventure to restore her kingdom, while balancing her trauma and job. Celena must uncover many secrets that are hidden far away from the world, to find out all of who she is. As you read on, you find out just how deep truth is and how it connects to all the events played out in the past. Through each book you see all the characters develop, change and find all the twists and turns awaiting you. In my opinion this series is one of the few 5 star reads I have ever read. I was entirely consumed by the Throne of Glass world, characters and plot. It is not only an action-based book but also, happy, shocking and funny due to Celena's sarcastic personality. All of Sarah J Maas’s Books are nothing short of incredible! 

Adaelie Crosby, Year 3

Skleněný trůn je série s průměrným hodnocením 4,5–5 hvězdiček, která zahrnuje 8 knih, z nichž jedna je předehrou k hlavnímu příběhu. Sleduje hlavní hrdinku Celenu Sardothian, trénovanou bojovnici, a její dobrodružství s cílem obnovit království a zároveň vyvážit její trauma a práci. Celena musí odhalit mnohá tajemství, která jsou skryta daleko od světa, aby zjistila, kým je. V průběhu knihy zjistíte, jak hluboká pravda je a jak souvisí se všemi událostmi v minulosti. V každé knize vidíte, jak se všechny postavy vyvíjejí, mění a najdete všechny zvraty, které na vás čekají. Podle mého názoru je tato série jednou z mála 5hvězdičkových čtení, které jsem kdy přečetla. Byla jsem zcela pohlcena světem skleněného trůnu, jeho postavami i zápletkou. Není to jen akční kniha, ale také šťastná, šokující a vtipná díky Celenině sarkastické osobnosti. Všechny knihy Sarah J Maas jsou prostě neuvěřitelné!

Sběratelé ostatků by Vlastimil Vondruška

It is a gripping historical novel which combines drama, history and love. It makes you feel for the main characters on their journey. The book is witty, dangerous and funny. It follows Martin ze Stvolna on his way back to Prague from France. He wants to finish his studies at the newly founded university during the reign of Charles IV but of course needs to confront many obstacles on the way including becoming a servant of the emperor Charles IV himself. It is the second book of the quadrilogy about the life of Martin ze Stvolna.

Je to strhující historický román, který spojuje drama, historii a lásku. Díky tomu se budete moci do hlavních postav na jejich cestě vcítit. Kniha je dobrodružná a vtipná. Sleduje Martina ze Stvolna na jeho zpáteční cestě z Francie do Prahy. Studium na nově založené univerzitě chce dokončit za vlády Karla IV., ale musí se samozřejmě potýkat s mnoha překážkami, včetně toho, že se stane služebníkem samotného císaře Karla IV. Je to druhá kniha kvadrilogie o životě Martina ze Stvolna.

Cheltenham Literary Festival Trip/Výlet na Literární festival do Cheltenhamu

On Thursday the 13th October a group of ECP students including me and two teachers, Mrs. Beard and Mr. Cossins, flew to the UK to attend the Cheltenham literary festival. We stayed three nights in a beautiful hotel with a view of the town. Every day was filled with interesting sessions with different writers and poets and different discussions took place. When we had some free time in between the sessions we usually explored the town and visited different shops. The festival took place in the Montpellier Gardens which are located in the heart of the city, next to the Imperial Gardens and the town hall.  

My favourite event was Writing Gothic with Lucy Strange. She was very kind and helped us to explore the gothic genre which she really enjoys writing. Her two books, the Sisters of the Lost Marsh and The Ghost of Gosswater were available to buy at the festival. She showed us different settings which fit the genre and she also recommended which vocabulary to use. My other favourite session was with Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author of the world famous ‘Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’, which is a really exciting book about a Hollywood celebrity in the 1950s. Reid was really sympathetic and she shared the story of her writing career, which was really inspiring.  The whole trip was really great because we explored a new city, learned about authors and their books and made friends from other years which we don't have a chance to do when in school.

Ve čtvrtek 13. října skupina studentů ECP včetně mě a dvou učitelů, paní Beard a pana Cossinse, odletěla do Spojeného království na Literární festival v Cheltenhamu. Na tři noci jsme byli ubytováni v krásném hotelu s výhledem na město. Každý den byl plný zajímavých sezení s různými spisovateli a básníky a probíhaly různé diskuse. Když jsme měli mezi sezeními trochu volného času, obvykle jsme prozkoumávali město a navštívili různé obchody. Festival se konal v Montpellier Gardens, které se nacházejí v srdci města, vedle Imperial Gardens a radnice. 

Moje oblíbená akce byla Writing Gothic s Lucy Strange. Autorka velmi laskavá a pomohla nám prozkoumat gotický žánr, který opravdu ráda píše. Její dvě knihy, Sisters of the Lost Marsh a The Ghost of Gosswater, bylo možné na festivalu zakoupit. Lucy Strange nám ukázala různé scény, které odpovídají žánru, a také doporučila, jaká slovíčka použít. Moje další oblíbená sezení bylo s Taylor Jenkins Reidovou, autorem světoznámého díla „Sedm manželů Evelyn Hugo“, což je opravdu vzrušující kniha o hollywoodské celebritě padesátých let. Reid byla opravdu sympatická a podělila se o příběh své spisovatelské kariéry, který byl opravdu inspirativní. Celý výlet byl skutečně skvělý, protože jsme si prohlédli nové město, dozvěděli se o autorech a jejich knihách a získali přátele z jiných ročníků, což ve škole není tak jednoduché.

The Cheltenham festival was a truly amazing experience. So many people all in one place, all of  them loving literature as much as you. Everyone had their stories to share, their favourite books or their own works. All of this set in a beautiful town with old churches and green parks. We had the opportunity to attend a large number of workshops and debates but for me, one stuck out more than the others. It was the Performance Poetry Masterclass by Joelle Taylor. In this she recited a piece of her award-winning book of poetry ‘C+nto &  Othered Poems’ and talked about the history of the book. Written about the butch counterculture of the 80s - 90s and set in a fictitious dyke bar in Maryville, it follows the stories of Taylor’s friends and is a commentary on the LGBTQ+ community and their oppressors. Joelle Taylor’s performance of the extracts from her book was truly astounding - full of energy and passion.  In the latter half of the workshop we were encouraged to write a praise poem of our own. Taylor was there to help anyone struggling with the assignment and in the end, experienced or not,everyone in the audience wrote a good and meaningful poem.

Návštěva Cheltenhamského festivalu byla opravdu úžasným zážitkem - tolik lidí, kteří milují literaturu stejně jako vy, na jednom místě. Každý měl své příběhy, o které se chtěl podělit, své oblíbené knihy nebo svá vlastní díla. To vše v krásném městě se starými kostely a zelenými parky. Měli jsme možnost zúčastnit se velkého množství workshopů a debat, ale pro mě jeden vyčníval více než ostatní. Byl to Performance Poetry Masterclass od Joelle Taylor. Recitovala v něm kus své oceněné knihy poezie  ‘C+nto &  Othered Poems’ a hovořila o historii knihy. Kniha pojednává o butch kontrakultuře 80. - 90. let a odehrává se ve fiktivním baru v Maryville. Přináší příběhy Taylořiných přátel a je komentářem o LGBTQ+ komunitě a jejích utlačovatelích. Autorčin přednes úryvků z knihy byl skutečně ohromující – plný energie a vášně. V druhé polovině workshopu jsme byli vyzváni, abychom napsali vlastní pochvalnou báseň. Taylor tam byla, aby pomohla každému, kdo se potýkal se zadáním, a nakonec každý z publika napsal dobrou a smysluplnou báseň bez ohledu na předešlé zkušenosti.

We had an amazing time at the Cheltenham Literary Festival and got the opportunity to talk to and listen to some incredible and inspiring speakers. Our trip started on Thursday the 13th of October and ended on Sunday the 16th of October. During our time in Cheltenham, we attended many sessions, walked around the town, and had some delicious food. My favourite session on Friday was a Gothic Writing Workshop with Lucy Strange, who is a fantastic author. This workshop was super fun and we got the opportunity to step into the shoes of a gothic genre writer and create our own gothic story. Lucy brought us into the world of gothic writing and we explored some themes and symbols of a gothic tale, as well as her books, which we could have her sign afterward. 

On Saturday morning I went to a session with Ian Rankin, who is a well-known and acclaimed novelist, and although I was not planning to buy his book, the way he presented the book and the story behind it made me buy it in the end.  In the afternoon I attended a session called “Malorie Blackman; Just Saying”, with the incredible children’s and teen author Malorie Blackman. This session was one of my favourite ones and I found it very inspiring and empowering. In the session, Ms Blackman talked about how she was told she was going to die before the age of 30, due to her illness, but she never gave up and chased her dream, despite people doubting her. Now, at the age of 60, she continues to chase her dream and write books to empower and inspire kids and teenagers. The Festival and the sessions we attended were amazing and I found it very inspiring to have the opportunity to casually chat with the poets and authors after the sessions. It was also great to get my books signed by the authors. Overall it was a unique and wonderful experience and I can’t wait for next year’s Cheltenham Literary Festival!

Na Literárním festivalu v Cheltenhamu jsme se měli úžasně. Dostali jsme příležitost poslechnout si neuvěřitelné a inspirativní řečníky a probluvit si s nimi. Náš výlet začal ve čtvrtek 13. října a skončil v neděli 16. října. Během našeho pobytu v Cheltenhamu jsme se zúčastnili mnoha sezení, procházeli se po městě a ochutnali dobré jídlo. Můj oblíbený workshop se konal v pátek a byl zaměřen na gothic writing pod vedením Lucy Strange, což je fantastická autorka. Tento workshop byl velmi zábavný a dostali jsme příležitost vžít se do kůže spisovatele gotického žánru a vytvořit svůj vlastní gotický příběh. Lucy nás přivedla do světa gotického psaní a prozkoumali jsme některá témata a symboly gotického příběhu i její knihy, které jsme si následně mohli od ní nechat podepsat. 

V sobotu ráno jsem se zúčastnila workshopu s Ianem Rankinem, který je známým a uznávaným romanopiscem, a i když jsem si jeho knihu neplánovala koupit, způsob, jakým knihu a její příběh prezentoval, mě přiměl k tomu, abych si ji nakonec koupila. Odpoledne jsem zašla na workshop s názvem „Malorie Blackman; Just Saying“ s neuvěřitelnou autorkou pro děti a dospívající Malorie Blackman. Toto setkání bylo jedno z mých nejoblíbenějších a zjistila jsem, že byla velmi inspirující a posilující. Paní Blackmanová hovořila o tom, jak jí bylo řečeno, že zemře před dosažením třiceti let věku kvůli své nemoci, ale nikdy se nevzdala a šla si za svým snem, přestože o ní lidé pochybovali. Nyní, ve věku 60 let, pokračuje v pronásledování svého snu a píše knihy, které posilují a inspirují děti a teenagery. Festival a jednotlivá sezení, kterých jsme se zúčastnili, byly úžasné a bylo pro mě velmi inspirativní, že jsem měla příležitost si po sezeních s básníky a autory nezávazně popovídat. Bylo také skvělé nechat si své knihy od autorů podepsat. Celkově to byl jedinečný a úžasný zážitek a už se nemůžu dočkat příštího ročníku Cheltenhamského literárního festivalu!

Reflections on Different Events/Souhrn různých akcí

The Motherload 

We were joined in this session by two authors, Vigdis Hjorth and Ainslie Hogarth. In the session both women introduced their books and discussed thoughts and questions put by the host. Vigdis’ book, ‘Is mother dead? ‘ is about an artist and her tricky relationship with her mother. Ainslie’s book, ‘Motherthing’, is about a woman and her relationships with her husband and his mother. Throughout this session, both women explored the topic of mothers and how much they can impact one’s life. I really enjoyed listening to their answers and thoughts. 

V tomto sezení se k nám připojily dvě autorky, Vigdis Hjorth a Ainslie Hogarth. Představily své knihy a diskutovaly s námi o myšlenkách a otázkách moderátora. Kniha Vigdise „Je matka mrtvá?‘ je o umělkyni a jejím složitém vztahu s matkou. Ainslieho kniha ‚Motherthing‘ je o ženě a jejích vztazích s manželem a jeho matkou. Během tohoto sezení obě ženy zkoumaly téma matek a toho, jak moc mohou ovlivnit něčí život. Velmi mě bavilo poslouchat odpovědi a myšlenky autorek.

Crassus: The First Tycoon  

It was a fascinating insight into the final days of the Roman Republic, shedding light on the corruption, violence, and opportunities that existed during that time. 

Byl to fascinující vhled do posledních dnů římské republiky, vrhající světlo na korupci, násilí a příležitosti, které v té době existovaly.

Alexandr Jiroušek, Year 4/4. ročník

Ardal O Hanlon   

Ardal O Hanlon discussed his two novels, along with his appearances in other media with comedy and facts about Ireland thrown into the mix, making the audience laugh quite a lot.  His second novel took him about 10 years to finish because he forgot about it until Covid. 

Ardal O Hanlon diskutoval o svých dvou románech, spolu s jeho vystoupeními v jiných médiích s komediálními prvky a fakty o Irsku, které byly přimíchány do celkového dojmu, což publikum často rozesmálo. Dokončení jeho druhého románu mu trvalo asi 10 let, protože až do období covidu na něj zapomněl.

David Nebeský, Year 4/4. ročník

One of my takeaways from Women in Power came from Kelly Beaver (Ipsos Mori CEO) who keeps an extraordinary number of statistics & research in her brain - the ones she shared I found fascinating. But the takeaway one is that if you are asking the floor for comments and questions following a talk/lecture/discussion, you get an overall better result if you start by taking a woman’s question. She acknowledged that recognising gender is an issue, but in general terms a male answering or asking a question first may silence an audience, whereas a woman is more likely to open up the subsequent conversation. Controversial perhaps but it might be worth testing out.

During QI Elves: Answers to Your Quite Ingenious Questions, John Lloyd led a light-hearted discussion on the nature of knowledge. The session was packed with anecdotes from his storied career, and Emily Jupitus added a layer of commentary on her journey from work experience to becoming the voice of Radio 2's Ingenius Questions.

World famous historian, William Dalrymple, presented a lightning-fast overview of his groundbreaking books on Indian history during a session entitled: The Company that Changed the World. Sourced entirely from 

Indian accounts, his books ignore the clichés on Anglo-Indian relations, and instead illuminate the sinister machines of capitalism that allowed a mercantile investment scheme to develop into a global super-power.

Jeden z mých poznatků od Women in Power pochází od Kelly Beaver (výkonná ředitelka Ipsos Mori), která ve svém mozku uchovává mimořádné množství statistik a výzkumů – ty, které sdílela, mi připadaly fascinující. Jde však o to, že pokud po proslovu/přednášce/diskuzi žádáte publikum o komentáře a otázky, dosáhnete celkově lepšího výsledku, když začnete tím, že přijmete otázku od ženy.
