Boroondara Sustainability  Leadership Summit

On Tuesday the 11th of October, a group of students from ASPS went to the Boroondara Sustainability Summit. We had been preparing two workshops for over a month, and were excited to present them. We had been practising our human pyramid to show the delicate balance fo the ecosystem.

The place where the summit was held was the Hawthorn Arts Centre on Glenferrie Rd . It was a big hall with a large stage, and each group had two tables to present to their audience. The two activities that we presented were the Bug Hotel and the Scavenger Hunt. The Bug Hotel had a few glass jars which they fitted with multiple materials to provide habitats for bugs. These were then wrapped with newspaper and labled up so the students could take them home. The reason that we held this workshop was to educate kids about why we needed to preserve the balanced ecosystem in our environment. The jars were put in a garden or a green space that would allow bugs to stay as a safe habitat for them.

During the scavenger hunt, we gave the audience questions, and the first one to finish was given a prize, which was a Pigface plant in a glass jar pot, which is a native plant in Australia.

We presented the workshop two times until noon, and we definitely improved our workshop during the morning, and then we attended other workshops. We learnt a lot of different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, and it was interesting to see workshops about roughly the same topic but still different. All of them had their own interesting points.

Afterwards, we got our certificate and we posed for a picture.

Going to the Sustainability Summit was an extremely beneficial experience for all that went there, and I strongly recommend for anybody next year in Year 5 or 6 to try it out!

Greenhouse by Joost: Imagine a house that grows its own food

In cinemas now at Palace Como, Cinema Nova and more (Check for sessions)

That’s the vision of environmental campaigner Joost Bakker, who was once dubbed the ‘Poster Boy of Zero Waste Living’ by The New York Times. This inspiring feature documentary follows Bakker as he builds a self-sustaining home, an ecosystem that provides its occupants with water, energy, shelter and nourishment. Joined in his work by internationally acclaimed chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett, Bakker faces his fair share of challenges to finish the home. Bureaucratic delays, COVID shutdowns and blackouts all threaten the build. But ultimately, Greenhouse is an uplifting look at the teamwork and ingenuity behind a paradigm-shifting project that bursts with life.

Filmed over the course of a year in beautiful central Melbourne, Greenhouse cleverly incorporates social media content to demonstrate the reach and influence of Bakker’s project.
