Vale Uncle Eric Peters

Local Elder, Uncle Eric Peters, passed away earlier this week. The father of Arbup Peters (Inner East's KEC - Koorie Engagement Coordinator) and uncle of Lea Jones (LAECG chair - Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group). An active member of community, Uncle Eric was a warm generous soul with a great sense of humour.  We send our condolences, love and best wishes to Arbup, Lea and their family members at this sad time.

Campfire Conversation - Student Report

On  Thursday 20th October 2022, the Always Was, Always Will Be Student Action Group met after school to help host the Campfire Conversation. Wiradjuri ASPS students Nate and Harrison joined as well, with their mother, Stef, and their father, Luke. Stef works in Bunnings and designed their NAIDOC Week coffee cups, with the aim being to “give people a happy feeling when they see them”. Koorie Engagement Support Officers Seth Nolan and Kira Peters, Dean Stewart (who designed the updated Indigenous Gardens) as well as members from Swinburne University’s Indigenous Student Services, Camberwell Grammar, Department of Education & Training and Reconciliation Groups all attended Thursday’s campfire.

The guests were given a tour to different sites of Indigenous plants within our school, including the lily plants at the entrance of the Kitchen Garden, Bush Thyme, Bush Basil and Saltbush in front of the Cottage, and of course the Indigenous Garden in the Front Playground. They were invited to take a bit of Pigface, so that they could reproduce the plants at their own homes. Empty glass jars and paint markers were supplied, and Nate, Harrison and the Always Was, Always Will Be team members decorated the jars and took them home.

The group members split into 2 groups based on grades and made 2 loaves of damper. 1 came out a flop but the Grade 3s  managed to remake it better than the other loaf. Marshmallows and damper were shared around as the guests chatted alongside the campfire.

Seeing the different people mingle like old friends, even though they may have never met each other before then, was a highlight of the night.
