Francophonie Week

Held each year around 20th March Francophonie Week is an event organised all over the world to celebrate the French language and its diversity. ‘La Francophonie’ encompasses a variety of French speaking cultures on the 5 continents and represents over 200 million speakers.

To launch Francophonie Week, our Year 10, 11 and 12 students went to the French Film Festival to watch the movie De Gaulle. It was a great opportunity for students to learn more about a very significant French historical figure. Then, our junior students from the immersion program and the French first language program went to watch Of Love and Lies.

Students enrolled in the French first language program participated in a video competition about Francophonie organised by the Association of French Teachers of Victoria and the Forum de la Francophonie. Participating schools were allocated a country, Glen Eira College was allocated Vanuatu. Our school won 1st prize in the bilingual category! Congratulations to Laura, Louise, Josephine and Adele who did a beautiful job with their video!

As part of Francophonie Week, all our students in the French 1st language program (Years 7-10) participated in an online incursion with Sylvain Lorgnier, a French story teller from New Caledonia, organised by Creipac (language school in New Caledonia) and the French embassy in Australia. He told us three stories about childhood, love, friendship, respecting each other and being grateful for what we have. It was very engaging and interactive and our students had very interesting questions!

Francophonie Week was also the opportunity for all students at GEC to participate in various French activities. They enjoyed a delicious French breakfast with croissant and pain au chocolat at Breakfast Club.

Some participated in the chess club run in French for the occasion. Students also had the opportunity to try out their ‘boule’ throwing skills in a petanque game (French lawn bowls) while others danced to French music.

Thanks everyone for being involved in such a busy and exciting week and for celebrating with us the diversity of the French-speaking world!
