A Healthy Breakfast (from betterhealth.vic.gov.au)

Breakfast is still really seen as the most important meal of the day!

There are many excuses for why people choose not to eat break: “I just woke up”, “I’m in too much of a hurry”, “Breakfast makes me feel gross!” But the reality is that by having a good balanced breakfast, you can set up your day with a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Why breakfast is so important:

1) Eating breakfast boosts your energy levels and keeps your metabolism up for the day. Boosting your energy in the morning is especially important as there is a massive gap between morning and when you last ate, so you need that energy!

2) Breakfast foods are rich in key nutrients such as folate, calcium, iron, B vitamins and fibre. Breakfast provides a lot of your day’s total nutrient intake. In fact, people who eat breakfast are more likely to meet their recommended daily intakes of vitamins and minerals than people who don’t!

3) Having breakfast can increase your mental performance, including your attention, ability to concentrate and memory. Children and adolescents who regularly eat breakfast also tend to perform better academically compared with those who skip breakfast. They also feel a greater level of connectedness with teachers and other adults at their school, which leads to further positive health and academic outcomes.

4) People who eat breakfast generally have more healthy diets overall, have better eating habits and are less likely to be hungry for snacks during the day than people who skip breakfast. Children who eat an inadequate breakfast are more likely to make poor food choices not only for the rest of the day, but also over the longer term.

So make a change and bring breakfast back into your day!
