What a week in the Discovery Centre! A short week, but a busy week! This week students were immersed in lots of new exciting activities. One of those activities was our Perceptual Motor Program, otherwise known as PMP which was ran on Friday. PMP is a movement-based program which helps students improve their eye/hand and eye/foot coordination, fitness, balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills. Students were very excited to take part in different activities that focussed on developing these skills. We want to say a big thank you to those parents who helped run a station, without your time and assistance we would not be able to run this important program. If there are parents or carers who are interested in helping out for a session, you are able to do so by contacting the school office or your child's classroom teacher.

In Literacy, we had our very first Reading Groups sessions. In Reading Groups we have a whole class focus when listening to a Big Book such as making predictions about our story, looking for different codes or golden words, spotting different types of punctuation and answering comprehension questions about the story. We then break up into small groups and completed differentiated activities that have a literacy focus. One of our favourite activities is getting to practise reading strategies in a small group with our teacher.

We continued to meet our codes and have been starting to use them to help us sound out words and have a go at writing the first sounds we can hear.

In Mathematics, we continued to explore numbers looking at what numbers are bigger and smaller through the game ‘Place Value War’. We also numbers in a game called ‘Magic Number’, by making and expressing different numbers in our own way. Students were able to get creative and use different concrete materials such as unifix, counters, dominoes, dice, teddies to make their numbers. Students also created their numbers with different number sentences. It was fantastic to see their love of learning shine when having the freedom to explore and show what they know about their number.

We visited the Library again this week, which is continuing to be a highlight for all students. A reminder to families that we visit the Library each week on a Wednesday, so students are able to return their book and borrow a new book each week. Please ensure students have their Library bag as they will need this to borrow a book from the Library.

We hope you all have a fantastic week!

Terima Kasih,

Jessica Tossell, Erin Dawson and Brooke Henwood

Student Voice

Students were asked about how they made their Magic Number in Mathematics.

  • Max - "I made my number 8 out of unifix. I made a unifix tower."
  • Lucky - "I made my number 10 with a number sentence. 6 and 4 make 10"
  • Jaden - "I made my number with the dots on the dice."

Reminders

  • Please bring a labelled library bag and the previous week's library book to return each Wednesday so that students can borrow a new book.
  • PMP continues this week - Friday March 19th - if you are able to assist with running a station during your child's class time please get in contact with either the School Office or your child's classroom teacher to book a day.
  • PMP times: FH  -11:30am, FJ - 12:00pm, FD 12:30pm.
  • Please ensure your child's hat, jacket etc. are named. This will help them to be quickly returned to them if they are misplaced.
  • Pleasant Snacks - if your child is buying anything, please send money with them and not their sibling. Foundation have an allocated time to purchase before other year levels.
  • Please bring labelled headphones to be kept at school in your child's tub. We will be using these in upcoming literacy and numeracy activities.

Pupil of the Week

FD: Eric C -

For demonstrating a love of learning and creativity in maths. You did an amazing job when making a giraffe from blocks and then counting how many blocks you used to make it. Super work Eric!

FH: Nethun S -

For demonstrating the character strength of perseverance during our first PMP session! You had a go at the different activities and didn't give up even when it was tricky with your broken arm! Amazing effort Nethun!

FJ: Ted D -

For demonstrating perseverance when practising your handwriting. It was great to see you challenge yourself to carefully draw the shapes in the lowercase d and then use it when writing your name! Excellent work Ted!
