Curriculum

Welcome to Week 8! This week we are looking forward to 3-Way Conferences where we will discuss the success and achievements of Term One and reflect on student’s Term One learning goals.

In Writing last week, students continued to work on drafting their short narrative stories. Throughout the term, students have been busy focusing on using descriptive language, including adjectives to describe their character and setting, as well as ‘Sizzling Starts’ to hook the readers attention. This week, students will edit and publish their writing and create a front cover for their story. Keep your eyes out for their final published story on Seesaw.

During Literacy Groups, students developed their questioning skills by asking a range of questions before, during and after reading a text. Asking questions helps to understand what we are reading and make connections to the text. Students practised using sentence starters to ask questions about the characters, setting and illustrations in fiction texts, as well as information presented in non-fiction books. This is a skill you can continue to practise with your child when reading their Take Home Book.

In Mathematics, students focused on demonstrating their understanding of place value by making, naming and ordering numbers. Students enjoyed using hands-on materials to represent and partition numbers using thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, as practised renaming a given number. We also replayed a number of previously learnt games to allow students to consolidate the skills and understandings developed over the term. It has been wonderful to see students showcase their Love of Learning and Perseverance throughout our place value unit.

Throughout our Science unit, we have learnt about a range of different small insects including worms, ants and butterflies. We have investigated and compared the different parts of ants and worms, and modeled the life-cycle of a butterfly. Did you know that an earthworm is covered in tiny hairs that help it move through soil? This week, students are becoming ‘habitat detectives’ as they explore and create a habitat model for an animal.

We hope you have a wonderful week ahead,

Miss Glen, Mrs Gill, Miss Honan, Mr Jenkins, Mrs Seadon, Miss Wang and Miss Vo
