Years 8 & 9

Stories with a twist...

Year 9 English students have completed a short narrative unit focused on stories with a twist. Classes studied a range of short texts and created their own adaptation. All students have produced fantastic pieces that are imaginative, contain a great twist and leave the reader on the edge of their seat.

Read an excerpt of Jacob Alexander’s (9B) story below:

'The sky was dark and rain clouds rose high above the tops of the pine trees. The lake lay still, not a human or animal insight. The sound of wood hitting earth echoed from further down the path, disturbing the nearby leaves.

A sputtering eery glowing campfire burned near a ruined tent. A doll sat politely next to the fire as if it were warming itself from the cold. Francis’ almost dead parents were piled on top of dried leaves, a long sever from chest to waist. The doll smiled and red liquid oozed from her gaping black mouth.

Through the clearing Francis’ shocked face cut into the darkness as her body unwillingly dragged her towards the lake. She dug her heels into the ground wanting to go back and save her parents, but her wooden body forced her forward no matter how hard she tried to resist. Her green eyes, being the only part not affected by her transformation to a doll, pleading for help, desperately searching for a way out. She breathed heavily through her mouth trying to calm herself. ‘

Term 1 Mid-Point Review

By Sasha Hebbard (9J)

At the end of the holidays, I was itching to go back to school, and to see my friends and teachers. I was excited because I was doing photography and I had never done it before. In photography now we are doing self-portraits. In English we studied and wrote some spooky stories and mine was about a haunted white house. In science we are learning about murder and manslaughter and we have been doing blood spatters and a urine test - it’s been so interesting! I was also excited to go back because most of my classes are with my best friend.  Even though I was excited, I was a little bit nervous because I was in a whole new form group. I clearly had nothing to be nervous about because so far, everyone is lovely!

The three days of remote learning at the start of the year went well and fast. I did all my work, but I prefer going to school and socialising with other people. It was a little bit hard to do school from home because I found it harder to ask for help remotely and I would much rather ask for help when we are face to face with the teacher.
