Year 7

We would like to acknowledge the brilliant efforts demonstrated by our Year 7 students and their families in setting up and engaging in the snap lockdown and remote learning. This is to be applauded, as we hadn't been able to set up all students with lead in time, and only gave the students a 40 minute instruction to set up. We are ecstatic with the engagement of the students throughout this time. Well done!

HIGHLIGHTING 7A

What a start to the year 7A has had. They have taken to Bairnsdale Secondary College like ducks to water. 7A have all enjoyed getting to know each other and building friendships within the classroom and the year level. All students have demonstrated a strength in inclusivity and teamwork by encouraging each other to give all tasks a go and happily working with a mixture of peers. A key activity that 7A  enjoyed participating in, was a bridge building challenge during mathematics. In small teams, they were able to use paddle pop sticks, tape, string and blu tac to build a short bridge between desks. As a class, 7A have been studying Wonder in English. Through this novel study, students have been analysing and identifying with characters, developing reading strategies, participating in group discussions, and creating a collaborative character web in the class OneNote page. Overall, 7A have had a strong and successful start to their high school journey, demonstrating all the College values. Keep up the great work!

After learning about the Out of Africa theory, the students of 7A undertook an investigation of the history of Australia. They covered major events from the earliest signs of humans in Australia (around 62,000 years ago) all the way to John Batman in 1835.

They discovered how natural events such as the ice caps melting 16,000 years ago lead to the sea levels rising, causing Tasmania to be cut off from the rest of Australia. The students then made their own timeline of Australia, choosing at least five important moments to include.

7A have been working in their Pastoral class with Mrs Blackley.  Students are involved in developing their respectful relationships skills through a variety of activities and discussions. Topics covered so far include, understanding each other, respecting each other, kindness, empathy, understanding body language and identifying our own coping mechanisms. Students are responding well to the program and are showing kindness and empathy in their everyday life.
