Learning Intervention Team

Bairnsdale Secondary College has been fortunate to have received additional government funding to invest in student learning across the College. Students will be able to receive help and support from a broader variety of programs designed to increase learning opportunities for students. Most students involved will have received an invitation to become part of these programs – either through teacher recommendation or test results. Opportunities will continue to be available for students throughout 2021.

Each program aims to target a specific level of skills, but all will help students to achieve their best:

Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Support (MYLNS) is catering for students in Years 8 and 10 who need targeted teaching to build on skills they may have missed and to ensure they have the required literacy and numeracy skills needed for future work, education or training.

Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) helping students develop fluent reading skills.

The Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) aims to help students to achieve their potential whether they are operating at the level expected or have higher aspirational goals. Teacher-tutors will share their expertise and time to provide explicit instruction focusing on the best outcomes for each individual.

Maths Extension and the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) are for students who have been identified as having higher than expected ability in literacy or numeracy. The student excellence programs offer intensive courses in Maths and English to challenge and extend the capabilities of students. The programs will complement classroom learning.

Our new Teacher-tutors to the College are:

  • Tronell Eveleigh - Junior Numeracy
  • John Florance - Senior Numeracy
  • Ann Gibbs - Junior Literacy
  • Lisa McShane – Senior Literacy

BSC staff who are also offering their expertise as Teacher-tutors are: Matt Corbett, Carey Lang and Ryan Telford. Teachers and tutors are working together to offer the best learning opportunities in class, one to one or in small group sessions.

For further information on any of the learning intervention programs, please contact one of the following Learning Specialists:

  • Ellen Hutchinson – Junior Literacy
  • Sarah Narramore – Junior Numeracy
  • Tara Bland – Senior Literacy & Numeracy
