VCE Food Studies Unit 1 – Melbourne Food Scene Excursion

On Tuesday the 20th of June, Miss Olney’s VCE Food Studies class went on an excursion to Melbourne to discover the local food scene. We went on a walking tour with a company called Hidden Secrets Tours and were able to taste test foods from different cultures that have influenced the Melbourne food scene. These foods included: Turkish Delight, Gelato, Chocolate and Macrons. The class then went and enjoyed the famous Italian dessert ‘Cannoli’ from the equally famous Brunetti’s on Lygon St, Carlton. Below are images of the class enjoying their chocolates from Koko Black and Bridie Tremellen, Erin Woodman and Matilda Dalgleish enjoying their Macarons.

Technology

As the Semester draws to a close it is important to remind parents that all students enrolled in a Technology subject must come prepared in week 1 with ear protection and covered black leather shoes. Strictly NO CANVAS. This is a department policy and one that is strictly followed by all the Technology teachers.

For parents information these are the following projects that the student levy covers in Metal and Woodwork subjects for 2017. These tasks are supported by the innovative Victorian Curriculum which has a focus on student designed solutions.

Year 7 Materials                               Flying bird, Army Tag, Ruler, iPad Stand

Level 1 Basic Wood                         Folding Table, Storage Device, Foot Stool

Level 2 Simple Furniture              Coffee Table

Level 3 Advanced Furniture         Storage System

Level 1 Basic Metal                          BBQ Tools, Tool Box, Dice

Level 2 Magic Metal                        Trophy, Garden Sprinkler, Drill Gauge,                                                                         Fishing Rod Holder

Basic Woodwork

Basic Woodwork students Kitt McCamley, Josh Whitehead and Mitch Bartlett with their folding tables (see photos below). These tables are quite complex to build and the students have worked very hard in completing the design briefs and construction phases. They also learnt how to use the CNC Milling Machine for engraving on the table tops.

Magic Metal

7C & G - Spinners

We have seen many of our Wanganui Park students be distracted by all types of crazes this year. Bottle flipping was one of them that has thankfully lost momentum and the Dab is still practiced but also has lost some appeal, but the fidget spinner has many students with a desire to be stimulated in the latest novelty. With students spinning and twisting these curved, shaped and coloured pieces of plastic in class, some teachers have wanted to ban them altogether.  However, a few technology staff down in D Block could see where this new-found craze could be focused toward learning in a practical sense in the technology rooms. Our junior students of 7C and 7G seized the opportunity to create their own spinning, curved and coloured plastic distraction device while being totally engaged in hands on learning. These small little devices have enabled these students to design, learn and develop new transferable skills. While the argument of the fidget spinner being a distraction in class and I’m sure they are, 7C and 7G couldn’t wait till their class of technology rolled around again so they could drill, cut, file, sand and polish their own bespoke original spinner. I'm happy to accept that the scientific evidence of students using fidget spinners is still inconclusive but I’m 100% convinced that making them has been an enjoyable one.

Simple Furniture

With the end of term drawing near there is a focus like no other to complete those finishing touches on all projects in the technology rooms. The year 9 Simple Furniture students have designed and constructed small tables this semester, some are completing the staining and lacquering process before taking them home. Some students are still undertaking the construction of their table, they are realising those enjoyable sports days away or lost time has caught up with them at the busy end of term.

Advanced Metal

Advanced Metal students have completed their Outdoor Cooking Solutions and will be testing their functionality on Friday. Students worked from a brief that had limited constraints to produce a product that was able to cook for two adults using a sustainable resource. Luke Bartels and Jonah Thompson designed a swinging type design whilst Haydon Lomas produced a round design with flat folding legs and a grill. An excellent response to the brief, well done.

VCE Product Design and Technology

Our VCE Product Design and Technology students are nearing the end of Unit 1. Jeremy Wyatt is pictured with his redesigned clock that has been designed to match an existing environment. The use of LED lights, a combination of flat and gloss finishes and an efficient production plan contributed to Jeremy’s good result.
