Focus on Learning

Campfire, Watering Hole and Cave

St Edward's continues to embrace contemporary learning and is working towards adopting this approach from Kindergarten to Year 6. Learning spaces within our classrooms are divided into smaller task focused spaces that relate directly to the learning behaviours students should display when working in each area.  At St Edward's we label each of the areas as outlined by Thornburg and Hewes (2013):

The Campfire: The campfire is a space where learners meet to receive explicit instructions. There is only one person speaking at a time in this space. This person is called the expert.

The Watering Hole: The watering hole is a space where students work in small groups to complete tasks. They are encouraged to discuss, collaborate and share ideas.

The Cave: The cave is a space where students work independently to complete tasks.

The staff members at St Edward's are very excited about continuing to improve student learning outcomes through embracing the many benefits of flexible learning spaces.
