Independence Centre

Curriculum

Last week was a busy week in the Independence Centre. Thank you to all parents and students that came to 3 way conferences. It was an excellent opportunity for students to share with parents what they have been enjoying about school, what they are proud of so far and the areas that they want to improve on.

In Mathematics sessions across the week, students began a graphing project. As a class, we developed a survey question to discover what everyone's favourite chocolate bar filling is. The students then chose their own answer options and began surveying their classmates to collect the results. These results were then displayed on a column graph, a strip graph and some pie charts. Some students used ‘hundreds beads’ to calculate the percentage of students choosing different toppings and even converted these to fractions.

In Literacy sessions, students explored the author’s intent of various texts. They read through different texts and explored their features to determine whether the purpose is to persuade, inform or entertain (P.I.E). Students continued to explore persuasive texts in writing sessions, working hard to identify persuasive devices and rank various phrases from ‘low impact’ to ‘high impact’.

On Thursday, students finally had the opportunity to test the bridges that they have been constructing in STEM lessons over the term. For this project, they were required to build a bridge using various household materials that could hold 4kg of weight and allow water to travel underneath. The students completed a reflection on GoogleSlides and uploaded this to their Seesaw account. We hope all parents have been able to access Seesaw since the 3 way conferences. Please let your child's teacher know if you are having any difficulties accessing this digital portfolio.
