Curriculum

Another interesting week has been and gone in the Leadership Centre!

On Monday, the Grade 6’s were paid a visit by the Assistant Principal of Mullauna College and former MPRPS student Tasia to inform the students about how Secondary School at Mullauna College looks. The students learnt about the idea of having different teachers for different subjects, the uniform requirements at the school, the extra-curricular activities that students involve themselves in and how day-to-day life looks as a Year Seven student.

In Guided Inquiry sessions this week, students used their Guided Inquiry booklets to help design their own t-shirt using pictures, quotes, symbols and words that were all about them. Students drew a draft plan for their t-shirt and were then able to copy it onto t-shirt transfer paper where it was then transferred onto their t-shirts.

In Mathematics sessions, students continued to explore a range of different learning tasks using fractions and decimals. Students explored using the four operations with fractions and decimals whilst some played a fun, interactive game called Race to One Whole. A challenging activity for the students was the Decimaze game. Students started at 100 and had to follow a particular path on the maze to find the highest number they could get. Using all four operations, a mixture of decimals and fractions were presented in each path and students had to find what type of operations worked best to get the highest number.

During our writing sessions this week, students explored the idea of Show, not Tell. The students were challenged to write how they could use a range of vocabulary and in particular adjectives to create a specific image in the mind of the reader. Students also continued to work on their Ethical Dilemma stories where they are to present an ethical dilemma within the story of their characters. They have included a number of choices and consequences within their story as well. Students explored the writing process stage of conferring this week, where they ask their peers to provide feedback on specific areas of their writing within their ethical dilemma story.

During the week, the Leadership Centre teachers also had their Term 2 Planning Day. A really important part of the day was receiving feedback from all the students through a survey and including a number of the students in our Planning Day. It was great to hear their feedback on the year so far and what they would like to improve on and see more of throughout Term 2.  Thank you to all the students who contributed to this discussion.

Have a wonderful week! Mr Andrew Shaw, Miss Ros Walker, Mr Hamish Burrill and Miss Megan Campbell.
