Student Librarians promoted!

Congratulations to our first student librarians Adam Newman and Layne Dellevergini who have reached their final stages in library training to obtain a Gold award. From 2020 they will be promoted to supervisory roles with the responsibility of training the new intake of Student librarians from year 8 applicants. Their work and leadership representation has been outstanding.

The Student Librarian program was introduced this year and was open to year 8 students.

Student librarians provide valuable input into library development, and raise the profile of the library among their peers. Their involvement:

  • Gives other library users a positive role model.
  • Provides the student body with a sense of ownership of the library.
  • Extends students’ library skills.
  • Teaches students to work as part of a team.
  • Helps the library run more smoothly.
  • Compliments the work of library staff and teachers.

Student librarians are volunteers selected by the teacher with library responsibility and/or other library staff. They become part of library staff and contribute to the effective running of the library. Getting them on board is treated with appropriate gravity and involves a competitive and fair recruitment process.

If you are interested in applying for a role in 2020, please speak to Layne and Adam to gain an understanding of what is involved. You can obtain an information package at the start of 2020.

Wheeler's ePlatform for eBooks and eAudiobooks

This term we introduced eAudiobooks via the Wheeler's ePLatform and have added the eBooks for all students to enjoy just in time for the school holidays. This means students can now access books for reading pleasure at anytime from anywhere. There are over 2400 items to select.

The best way to access reading material is by downloading the Wheeler's ePlatform app to a mobile device.

To borrow items:

1. Open the app and select your school Edgars Creek Secondary College.

2. Sign in with your compass login details.

3. Browse and select an eAudiobook to listen to or select an eBook to read.

You can tell if it is an eAudiobook because a headphone symbol is present on the bottom right of the thumbnail image.

Just like the catalogue, you can search by title, author or other categories to help filter out results.

Enjoy reading for pleasure over the holiday period.

Young Dark Emu: A truer history

Written by Bruce Pascoe

reviewed by Mare Maticevski

This is a must read for everyone! Young Dark Emu is a version of the original Dark Emu written for a younger audience. I read Dark Emu when it was first published and have been recommending it to everyone since. Bruce Pascoe meticulously researched original documents of first colonists and provides evidence for a reconsideration of the 'hunter-gatherer' nomadic existence of Aboriginal societies. What is presented is evidence of first civilisation with organised farming techniques cultivating land and natural resources and many permanently set-up communities. Young Dark Emu brings this evidence to all. It was the first book to be read in the first book club of Parliament House. Dark Emu has consistently been on the best seller top ten list all year and a series based on the book is currently in production by the ABC.

Have a wonderful holiday!
