Celebrate Harmony Day

“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success”.  Henry Ford

Harmony day is a day of celebration where we promote diversity and acceptance of other cultures.

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day because traditionally it signifies communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

Ways you can celebrate Harmony Day include:

  • Sharing a meal
  • Sharing your stories
  • Watching, reading and listening
  • Asking about different cultures
  • Reconnecting with old friends and family members
  • Sharing thoughts around cultural backgrounds
  • Wearing something orange

Doncaster Secondary College values multiculturalism and diversity in our community. We are always learning together and working together.

You + Me = Us

Respectful Relationships

Doncaster Secondary College has been continuing to roll out the initiative of "Respectful Relationships", with an action plan to improve relationships within the school community.

On Wednesday, 29 February, Doncaster Secondary College held a community of practice, collaborating with East Doncaster Secondary College and other local schools. During this meeting, we shared ideas on how to make respectful relationships a priority in our community.

Respectful relationships embed a culture of mutual respect, trust, good communication, understanding and honesty. Being in a relationship should be a positive experience for both people.

Doncaster Secondary College hopes to support all members of our school community to foster respectful relationships by encouraging conversations at home and within the local community.

Wellbeing Moment -

How To Manage COVID-19 Stress

Congratulations, you made it to the end of the week, and what a week it's been. The current climate of fear and uncertainty is taking its toll and we're sure you're noticing the dense energy that's consuming a large part of the population.

With that in mind, our Wellbeing Moment is around how to combat COVID-19 related stress. Check out these simple strategies:

1. Limit your media time

Unfortunately both mainstream and social media outlets are stirring up a lot of fear and confusion about the coronavirus (see Toiletpaper-gate 2020) and this is having a significant impact on the stress levels of our communities. It's important to stay informed, however ensuring you receive your information from official sources such as the World Health Organisation, and limiting your consumption of media to alleviate anxiety during this difficult time.

2. Stay active

One of the keys to a strong immune system is to exercise and while it is incredibly tempting to hide under a doona until this passes, physical activity it crucial to maintaining your physical and emotional health during times of stress. You should also continue any recreational activity that is a good mood-booster. Get outside in the sunshine, spend time with friends and do whatever will make you feel good.

3. Breathe

The practice of deep breathing will help combat cortisol and adrenaline production due to increased stress and anxiety.

Consciously moving the breath from your lungs to your diaphragm will slow breathing down and create a feeling of calm.

Try this exercise:

- With your feet on the floor and your right hand on the palm of your left, take a deep breath in for 4 counts.

- As you breathe in, slowly run the fingers of your right hand up the left palm.

- Now, slowly exhale for a count of 5. As you breathe out, slowly run your fingers back down your left palm.

-Repeat as necessary.

We hope this has helped. Stay healthy and have a great weekend.
