How to Effectively Communicate with Your Teen

As parents, it’s easy to get caught up in the stresses of day-to-day life, and we sometimes forget how important it is for us to model the kind of behaviour we wish to see in our children.

The behaviours children learn at home to a large degree influence how they act and respond to situations later in life. Although as a school we model and expect children to reflect our college values of respect, responsibility, resilience and teamwork, the home environment is critical – if not more important - in shaping the behaviour of our children.

Here are some tips on how to be a good role model at home:

  • Show respect and caring for others, even if you have differing viewpoints
  • Express negative emotions constructively
  • Encourage self-reflection
  • Demonstrate how to resolve conflict constructively by talking through issues
  • Avoid aggressive behaviour and handle discipline fairly
