Here are some reflections by MyFuture students about their recent trip to South Melbourne Market.

As a part of the Year 9 MyFuture program, we went to the South Melbourne Market. We really enjoyed our trip and had a great time. We spent the day eating food, looking at the stalls and learning about the businesses.

To get to the market, we caught the 907 bus to Exhibition Street and then got on a tram that went straight to the market.

At the market, we were told to complete a worksheet that required us to learn about the prices of items for sale and record them as we walked around the stalls.

The highlight of the trip was a chance-meeting with Chris Judd. He was having lunch and came outside to have a chat and take photos with us. Overall, we had a fabulous day.

On Wednesday, 12 February, some Year 9 MyFuture students went on an excursion to South Melbourne Market. The aim was to learn about different industries and observe how stallholders interact with each other in a shared space.

We travelled there by public transport, learning how to be respectful and responsible in the community, and we extended our knowledge of bus etiquette.

At the market, we saw lots of different stalls such as food, clothes, toys and more. We found it interesting to see how different the stalls were to each other.

As well as wandering around the market, we had to complete a  worksheet. One of the tasks was to find the cheapest item. Surprisingly,  the cheapest item was a bunch of bananas, which was only $1.99 per kilo. We were also given a map so that we could navigate through the market stalls. This was helpful when we were completing our worksheet because it allowed us to see what stalls were in particular areas of the market.

On Wednesday, 12 February, The Year 9 MyFuture group, went to South Melbourne market for the day.

We left at 10:15, and took the 907 bus into the city. Everyone was in good spirits, excited for the day.

When we arrived at our stop, we took another form of public transport: the 96 tram. The tram was more scenic and enjoyable in my opinion.

Once we arrived, we were told the rules and when we should meet. We split up into groups and were given a worksheet with detailed activities to carry out.

We had to complete an outfit for a job interview, find prices for groceries, and design a healthy lunch we could purchase for a budget of $10.

Once we completed the work, my group sat down to have lunch. The food was fantastic, and the market wasn’t overly busy.

Soon, it was time for us to leave. We bundled back onto the train and then onto the bus, arriving back at school with time to spare. We were all tired at this point, worn out from a day of travel and exploration.

It was an enjoyable excursion and I can’t wait for the next one.

MyBakery - MKR Challenge

This week in Ms McArthur's My Bakery class, we were given the opportunity to participate in an MKR challenge.

In groups of four, we designed two meals that were to be judged at the end of the day.

Teachers came to taste each group's dishes and we were judged on: level of consideration given to food handling safety and hygiene requirements; presentation and eye appeal; taste; creativity or originality and appropriate plating.

We were given a list of ingredients chosen by our teacher and could pick anything to make with them. My group agreed to make burgers with homemade bread and cupcakes.

My group won the MKR challenge and were rewarded with a box of chocolates.
