Schools' ANZAC Service

The 29th annual ANZAC Service for schools was held the Wednesday before ANZAC day by the Rotary Club of Templestowe. Schools within the Manningham district were represented by over 800 students and staff, Manningham’s Mayor Paula Piccinini attended on behalf of the council and also attending was special guest Corporal Laura Hando from the Australian Defence Force - School of Signals.

The audience was welcomed by Rotary Club President - Mr Bruce Evans, he introduced us to the long history of the Schools’ ANZAC ceremony stretching back to 1990, in which year the War Memorial Plaque was moved from its prior location to its current location on Foote st Templestowe and thus the Templestowe Memorial Park was founded. Mr Evans handed over to Manningham’s mayor Paula Piccinini from which point she acknowledged her own gratitude and that of the audience and addressed how important it is to continue to commemorate the ANZACs for the service.

The Whitefriars Band and Choir performed “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” followed by guest speaker Corporal Laura Hando from the Australian Defence Force. Laura had a firsthand experience of what the ANZACs had been through as she had been to the landing site at Gallipoli, ‘I found it difficult to climb up the steep rock face, and fortunately for me I didn’t have to wear heavy clothing and other large metal equipment, whilst having Turkish soldiers above.’ Lastly, Laura stated that the greatest achievement any soldier can achieve is to fight overseas for their country, and for that reason all the ANZACs are heroes in her mind.

When Laura finished she handed back over to Mr Evans, at which point the wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial stone. Each school had made and brought their own wreath, our school captains lay down our wreath on behalf of DSC. Once all the wreaths were in their place the Last Post was played by Robert Dawson, the bugle was followed by a minute’s silence for the troops that did not return home. After a minute’s silence, everybody stood to sing Advance Australia Fair.

Year 8 Medieval Day

On Thursday, 2 May, our year 8 students had the opportunity to engage in Medieval studies through "hands-on" experiences. The students were taught about jousting, archery, fashion, weapons and crime and punishment. Overall it was a fantastic day, thoroughly enjoyed by the students involved.

Year 7 Edendale Farm Excursion

On Monday, 29 and Tuesday, 30 April, the year 7’s went on an excursion to Edendale Farm, where we were taught about different types of energy, and how reusable items compared to single-use items can save the planet. We got the opportunity to get up and close and personal with worms, measure the pH, salinity, and turbulence of the water, and had to record it. In a role-play with costumes and props, we learnt how everyone contributes to water pollution. Afterwards, we generated our own electrical energy which they used to make popcorn.
