Membership Engagement 2018-2019

Jen Spiteri and Maripaz Berlin

This year our Membership Engagement events were a mix of social and proactive union activities. We had our regular Chilldowns every month at Britannia Arms. These regular monthly socials pepper our year with opportunities to socialize with fellow members.

In the Fall we partnered with our Political Action Committee and hosted our Ice Cream Social at Cahalan Park with our endorsed school board candidates, Brian LoBue, Dennis Hawkins and Tami Moore. Our Association also hosted the Small Group Caucus in October for our psychologists, SLPs (Speech and Language Pathologists, TOSAs (Teachers On Special Assignment) and Special Ed educators.

This past school year we sent members to a number of CTA (California Teachers Association) conferences, such as the  Region 1 Leadership Conference in Downtown San Jose, where 18 site reps, along with other OGEA Leadership, attended. OGEA also sent members to the GLBT, New Educators, and Equity and Human Rights Conferences.

In another collaborative endeavor, Membership Engagement and the Bargaining Team teamed up and hosted gatherings where members  were invited to give input on what’s going well as an educator in Oak Grove and what are still challenges. The data we gathered was used to inform the bargaining  team on which issues were the most important to the members. These were the Beer with the Bargaining Team in October, then and our Nacho Days in the Spring, which were held at each of the intermediate schools.

Our Labor Alliance with CSEA (California Schools Employees Association) and AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) continues with a shared ChillDown we held in December  and our upcoming shared event, Bocce and Barbeque, June 7 at Lake Almaden Park.
