Wellbeing and Engagement

It was so wonderful to welcome back to on-site learning all of the students Foundation to 5/6. From the exuberant looks on faces on Wednesday morning, it was clear to see that the return was very welcome. The students all looked very happy too…

The classrooms were buzzing with activity from the first session and we were back, with classroom activities, interaction and learning, virtual incursions, 100 days of school celebrations, lunchtime activities and Olympics Celebrations. From Wednesday morning Liz Barr, Kate McLeod and I were thrilled to visit classrooms full of happy engaged students. All the Foundation classes and the Level 1 classes were celebrating their 100 days of school last week. I overheard a lovely comment in FW from a boy to the girl next to him – “They are moving me to Grade 1 tomorrow and we might not be in the same class. Its been good.” I was curious so asked him what he meant – he responded “Well, we have done our 100 days so tomorrow we go up to grade 1.” I gently explained to him that we have some more days in Foundation and was pleased to see that he was quite happy with this.

Our Olympics Celebration Day was held on Friday and the assembly was run virtually with each classroom joining via WebEx to see their representatives speak for their country in the gym. It was wonderful to hear the ‘interesting facts’ that each group shared on their country – may of which had little to do with sporting excellence or Olympic events.  This would be an excellent addition to the real Olympics opening ceremony we feel. The students then competed in sports activities in their levels in several rotations – with Level 5/6 going to Heatherdale Oval for their Olympics rotations. Even our office got in on the Olympics fun. A big thank you to Mr Sacchetta for organising such a wonderful day.

Number Wonder

As many of you are aware, I was fortunate to last term participate in a 4 week leadership internship at Milgate Primary School. Milgate is an International Baccalaureate PYP school which means they have a strong focus on Inquiry based learning and a focus on building curiosity. A part of this internship was to develop a project to deliver here at Rangeview for the benefit of our students.

Therefore, this term we have begun a new project for Grade 1 students called Number Wonder. The purpose of this project is to both engage the student’s curiosity with mathematics, and provide parents/carers with access to the numeracy curriculum in real time.

The model is simple and involves a weekly ‘provocation’ being sent home via email and SeeSaw. Parents look at this with their child, gather ideas, collect some data, post back on Seesaw at the end of the week, and most importantly – be curious together. Student responses are not marked as this is a curiosity project. They are discussed and shared with the grade and many will be shared in the school newsletter, at assemblies and on the school’s FB page.

The Number Wonder is directly related to the mathematics curriculum the students are covering each week. It is our hope that by knowing what is being taught, parents can have conversations around that topic at home in everyday situations. This greatly enriches the students learning experience.

Thanks to all the grade 1 parents who are already participating in this numeracy project. We hope they are finding it engaging and it leads the students to ‘wonder about numbers’

Men’s Shed

Rangeview would like to thank the Men’s Shed and in particular Clem Rogers, for their extremely kind donation of a Billy Cart to be used by students who need it at our Billy Cart Day. Clem had a grandson come through Rangeview and this was a thank you gift. We are sure this will get some wonderful use later this term!

Thank you Mr Rogers and your Men's Shed Friends!
